Default What film/s SHOULD you have watched, but...

G'day,

Apparently, I am causing a travesty by not having watched the Godfather films.

And, whilst I can say that yes, I have seen Citizen Kane - first time purely because I thought it must actually be a good film (no, even after viewing it at film school, I am not appreciative of it), it was not until film school in 2006 that I saw Casablanca.

Also until my uni days, had never seen:

Reservoir Dogs
Picnic at Hanging Rock
Weekend
Ŕ bout de souffle (Breathless)
Vertigo
The Searchers
Amelie (had seen 95% of it three times...but never got to the end cos of my sister-in-laws DVD player)

What film/s have you never seen, that you KNOW you should have...

I'm not interested in them, but people look at me weirdly when I say that I haven't seen any of the Matrix Movies.

Maybe I should tack books on here too... I mentioned JD Salinger yesterday at work, and got 3 blank stares...

I think that's understandable... I mean, the Matrix series is at least scifi, and if you're not a scifi boff... (you're a bloody fool of course cos they're... for the most part... excellent films)

Sadly, not many people don't read books anymore.

Personally, looking at Godard's other works, I think "Ŕ bout de souffle (Breathless)" is a bit overrated, compared with e.g. Alphaville (despite their differences). Anyway, I personally didn't see the Seventh Seal until my 4th year of uni :P

The Player

Touch of Evil

Wild Strawberries (nor Seventh Seal!)

Festen

Deliverance (duelling banjo's anyone?)

The Piano

Taxi Driver

Rebel without a cause

Apocalypse Now

(These are just the highlights of the Times Top 100 Movies that I've not seen, there are plenty others I've "missed out on")

There are films I haven't seen that I think I really need to, and then there are films that others reckon I should see.

Of the first category, foremost on my list are:
  • Three Colors trilogy
  • von Trier's Europa trilogy
  • Manderlay
  • Ponyo (ok, it isn't out yet )
  • African Queen (yes, really)
  • Drawing Restraint 9

Films everybody reckons I should see, but I can't be bothered:
  • Transformers 2
  • Borat
  • Brüno
  • Batman 1 to whatever
  • (countless others)

Then, there are those films I regretted watching, but they shall remain unnamed...

Cheers
Steffen.

Started watching Watchmen last night, got in 50 minutes then realised the thing goes for three bloody hours - that's nigh on half a day for a mediocre film that tries so hard!

I might have to break up the viewing in a couple more chunks to get through it.

I haven't seen a lot of films I should have, just looking at IMDBs top 250 movies I haven't seen:
Godfather (all of them)
Shawshank redemption
Good the Bad and the Ugly
Schindler's List
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
12 Angry Men
Casablanca
Seven Samurai
Goodfellas

According to IMDB I've only seen 5 of the top 15 films of all time, although I have seen bits of Godfathers 1&2, Schindler's List and Shawshank redemption, but never all of them, probably because I caught them on TV already half way through.

It's like when people thrust some novel into your palms and make that intensely deep eye contact, followed by the words, "You absolutely MUST read this!"

and just to be open minded... you do - and it's a mushy heap of dingo's kidney's.

As if - oh hell yes - you'll laugh, you'll cry, it'll change your life - etc.

Saw Brüno last night. It's Borat all over again - taking the piss out of humourless Americans, though after Borat, I'd say the American public were a little more weary this time, and they'd have had to edit the crap out of this flick, on Americans who twigged, over the small crop of basic fools who didn't.

Only go if you need a reason to eat Malteses.

As for Batman and the like, these are automatically purile flicks crammed with special FX and fings getting blown up.

Will be looking for more films by Werner Herzog, after having seen The Enigma Of Kaspar Hauser, and I'm still seeking out Sunday's Children on DVD by Daniel Bergman, son of Ingmar Bergman, yet from several searches, it appears to have been depublished. Bastards.

The Good the Bad and the Ugly is most excellent... the soundtrack, the cinematography, Clint Eastwood, a movie needs nothing else.

Some others that have not been mentioned, i would recommend some of the movies that have been previously mentioned, but here are a few more...

Bowfinger - classic comedy about making movies from people who make movies

Wait until Dark - one of the best small budget films ever made, a must see for the up and coming independent film maker

michael Clayton - well made, well edited, plus has george clooney (EIDT) - Tilda Swinton is absolutely Fabulous - the fear pn her face is amazing....

American History X - Edward norton is ausom so is little brother (edward furlong)

The Bank - good Australian film

Except for Sergio Leone's second spaghetti western epic: Once Upon a Time in the West, which has a brilliantly complex plot and final twist, this time, without Clint or the brilliant Lee Van Cleef, yet with an equally famous cast of Henry Fonda - as the completely psychopathic Evil, Charles Bronson - as the ambiguous Good, and Jason Robards - as the Side Kick, not to mention the totally fuckable Claudia Cardinale, as the damsel.

Far more Samurai in nature over the Good, the Bad and the Ugly, many lines in this flick appear to take on a haiku nature. The plot is completely absorbing, and from memory, it goes on for a biscuit under 3 hours.

Sergio Leone once again uses Ennio Morricone to provide the score.

Added to my list of demanded DVDs in PAL format.

I fail to see why any film is 'must watch' (or book a must read). What I like may be anathema to the rest of you, and vice versa. Why run with the pack.

Watch/read what you enjoy and bugger the rest!

I laugh derisively when people tell me to watch/read Stephen King...

And I hate Amazon and others who have the "If you like this, you may also enjoy..." lists...

But yes, subjectivity is all really. I'd never watched Casablanca cos... well... if I am going to sit in front of a telly by choice to something, it'd more likely be scifi... Though I do have to say, I loved watching the film... but possibly only due to the "oh, I know that line" feeling that I had pretty much all the way through... It felt like a comfy old slipper.
