Default Rant about EyeTV and exporting

Hi guys,

I have EyeTV, which I love and use all the time. The issue is, when I record a TV show, I compact it down and export to the Apple TV format... THIS TAKES FOREVER!

The other day I recorded a 2 hour program from Ten HD, and it took my MBP 6 hours to convert to Apple TV. My question is, why can't EyeTV just record to a QuickTime movie format? This would make life so much easier and less complicated.

Why does converting movies take so darn long on the latest technology?

Are you having this problem too?

Ricky.

What mac do you have?

The hardware does no encoding, its all software based.

Exporting HD content takes ages because you are working on ~20Gb of data. That's a lot of encoding!

The reason that EyeTv does not simply push out MPEG4 or some other "usable" format is because of the adage "shit in, shit out". The broadcasters send their programmes out in MPEG 2 format, for EyeTv to convert that on he fly is asking a lot!

You convert the shows into AppleTV format, do you use an AppleTV? If you do then perhaps use the patchstick on that so it can playback without conversion.

I reckon you need more grunt. My 4-core Mac Pro encodes a 50min EyeTV recording into AppleTV format in 43min, that's slightly better than 1:1.

Try getting a Elgato turbo.264 Video Encoder, it's 'plug in' grunt for the CPU-challenged.

Yeah, just get a Turbo.264. It works wonders.

Question regarding that - are you talking about HD content or SD? The difference in file size is considerable.

It was SD content, usually around 2Gb for a 1 hour program.
