Unhappy iPhoto - empty Trash issue on external HD

ok, so using iPhoto 7 on my old imac (10.4) i had my iPhoto Library on an external HD. during the course of a year or so I deleted 25000+ images from the trash in iPhoto and kept just over 25000.

i recently dumped all my images into iPhoto with the intention of sorting them out from scratch. To my surprise all 50 000+ images appeared on my new machine (iPhoto 8, 10.5)

now, obviously the images I thought were deleted never were and so I'm suspecting the fact they were on an external HD might be the reason why? The reason I ask is that I have now sorted them all out and have 50+GB of images I want to remove from my HD (and know they are no longer there). Is this a reasonable expectation if I just "Empty Trash"

Also can you securely delete images? using Stuffit for example? (this didn't work on my old set up and I haven't loaded it yet on my new machine)
(corporate sensitive images not nudie stuff ,)

Hope this all makes sense. Thanks
