Although I live a fair way out of the city, I would rather go in to the city and deal with the "experts" themselves.

Sounds like a good idea.
Geniuses are great. And yes, the official Apple Stores do repairs. I live away from the city as well (about 1 hour from CBD) but I still go, just because the service and turnaround time is excellent.
Online booking and great hours also help. Great service too.
