For some text based PDFs you can use Stanza, which is free on the app store. It's quite simple, but you need to use a computer to load the files from. It's a great program. For image based PDFs I use Datacase ($8.99 I think) from the app store. I use this to read pdf readings for uni. Works as a network drive through wireless connection. I use my MBP to send files across. It's a little cumbersome but OK for short docs (under 50 pages).

Hope this helps,
Deb
