Why would you need multiple passes? A limiter with look ahead and automatic range (so the db reduction is always a set amount) sounds like it`s exactly the same technique. Not exactly revolutionary.

I`m saying it`s FUD, because there`s a very strong chance they`re just using audio processing techniques that have been around since the 60s. They`re suggesting it`s not.

Btw... "gain controller" = anything that works with dynamics, so compresion, limiting, gating, expanding, or multi band versions of those are all gain controllers.
hmm.. okay.

I wasn't giving its technical name, I was describing what it does.

It looks at the audio in segments, not as one full chunk. It does not clip the audio, as a limiter does, it does, it is more like a compresser than anything else.

I don't see why it is such a big deal actually.

Well the podcast sounds much nicer after running the original AIFF file through it then putting it into Garageband for chapter marking and editing. Drag the file on, wait, listen to result and result is good - I like

Have you done it? perhaps put a snippet of the original pod cast up, and the same piece run though it, I'd be interested to hear the difference between the before and after...

I haven't got the original file here with me at work, but I'll post it up in a new thread later tonight for those that are interested.

Not a big deal at all.

While you're at it though, a limiter is just a compressor with a ratio of greater than 10:1. Limiting isn't clipping. Neither compression or limiting look at the audio as one full chunk... they process the audio as it passes through, sample by sample if they[re digital (some do use look ahead and other tricks though).

okay.. I remembered that limiters were harsh.. i though that ment there was clipping going on. you learn something new each day.

Another good show. I'm not sure "I'm too lazy to edit this bit out" horsing around exudes the professionalism you might want to send out to the world. On the other hand, I have no evidence that professionalism is one of the goals of the podcast, so keep up the good work.

ok, so we suck at audio, we should cut down on the "we should cut that out" talk, and we're definetly buying our own beer, but hows the content? relevant? different enough from the kabillion other mac podcasts out there? is the group dynamic working?

just curious...

I'm having a great time listening to you guys. I've got a reasonable idea about os x, but there's nothing like hearing from more knowable people who enjoy a laugh.

I think the request for ideas thread is a great way for the rest of us to contribute as well as allowing us to be part of the direction. (not to mention generating some great laughs - ants!)

Apps - well there's only so much time in a day to trawl thru the net and to hear about apps I'd otherwise never come across is fantastic.

As for technical issues, didnt even notice, to much smirking or laughing from me. But still nice to hear about that app to fix it. Wouldn't know otherwise.

I look forward to each episode, when's the next one?

cheers

I gotta say, I can't really comment on the content as I had to have the volume up to max on both iTunes and system to barely make out what was being said. Unfortunately I don't have an iPod anymore nor do I possess external speakers for my iMac, so full volume it had to be.

Even at that setting, if there was any noise outside my office it would drown out the podcast. Worst offender I could make out was decryption who tended to fall off his sentences - sounded like he was turning away from his mic (maybe to get another beer) - whenever he got to the end of a sentence.
As a result I basically stopped listening about halfway through.

I'm definitely no audiophile, but maybe upping the default input volume (is that even possible) would help.

Will definitely stay subscribed, but would like to be able to hear the thing better.

Of course!!! Well colour me slow!

I listened to the podcast earlier today, straight from iTunes after reading this thread. Having read the thread, I assumed (i've been making a few bad ones lately), that the version I had was the 'fixed' one. But I've only just realised -after reading decryption's simple yet blatantly obvious post, that iTunes would have simply downloaded the first available one which of course was the one in the tunnel!

I will download the 'new & improved' (can it be both?) one tomorrow and give it another jolly good listening to!

Right now I'm off to eat some humble pie!
