Linux on iPhone!
While i was looking at my RSS feeds today i came across this:
Quote:
I'm pleased to announce that the Linux 2.6 kernel has been ported to Apple's iPhone platform, with support for the first and second generation iPhones as well as the first generation iPod touch. This is a rough first draft of the port, and many drivers are still missing, but it's enough that a real alternative operating system is running on the iPhone.
What we have:
- Framebuffer driver
- Serial driver
- Serial over USB driver
- Interrupts, MMU, clock, etc.
What we have in openiboot (but hasn't been ported yet):
- Read-only support for the NAND
What we don't have (yet!):
- Write support for the NAND
- Wireless networking
- Touchscreen
- Sound
- Accelerometer
- Baseband support.

Hooray!?
Sure it's VERY crippled: No touchscreen support, but certainly it's promising?
You can check the guides here:

With a video (proof!) here:

So, what does this mean for the App Store and the iPhone in the future? Discuss!, and how long till this dies from the wrath of Steve Jobs? Also will this mean we finally get to see Android on the iPhone?

This is just my opinion, why would you want to? Sure the hardware of the iPhone is a sweet looking piece of gear but it is the operating system that makes the phone IMHO plus the app store, iPod etc...

I once loaded linux on my ipod... it was a fun little diversion and very clever, but ended up taking it off, as there really seemed no point.
What does look good about this is that it may lead to a way to load Android on the iphone, though I doubt Apple would be happy about that. Time will tell I guess. We'll have to wait for the first Android phone to hit Oz before we'll know if that's a good thing or not.

It would be nice to have a mobile OS not totally controlled by one entity. Sure the iPhone OS is great, but im sure it can be expanded in a way that is not in the Telco's best interest eg. Proper Tethering, etc.
but i must admit, cell phone makers have learned heavily from the innovation of the iPhone!
It's great news, just like the software unlock as it pushes the hacking efforts forward, as seen from the efforts of these people we have great "unauthorized" iPhone apps such as Backgrounder, Skype etc.
It is just an alternative really, and choice is good! =D
Mabye, we might eventually see copy-paste! :P

Have to agree with you on the copy and paste however it was Apple OS that made me buy the iPhone after years of use on the Palm OS but that is me, KISS .
Would be interesting to see Andriod running on it but, only for moment though. We shall see what they come up with down the track.

The only conceivable reason for doing this that I can think of is for testing apps being developed for phones that use an open source OS. Although if I ever wanted to do this I'd much prefer to buy a separate Android phone just for this purpose.

I'd be interested in trying out Android if it were ever ported.

Nerds like to do this sort of thing. It's not like they want to force you to have it on your iPhone, so let them have their harmless fun.

Competition from Linux may well force Apple to bring you cut/copy/paste. Of course, Apple never likes to be "bullied", either

Hehe, I think you are spot on. Still do not see the point but everyone likes to tinker...

Evocative, but apt.
