OS iPhone to iPhone app

Hi Y'all

Off to Bali with the family next week . As I surf and my wife and kids do not (kids too small, wife too scared), I will be gone for a couple of hours each day and will need to keep in touch. We both have iPhones and have been looking for an app to communicate without using our SIM cards.

I realise there is no push notification as yet and the app would need too be running to communicate. I tried the early version of AIM and was disappointed and am a little time poor to try out every app

Does anybody have an app they can recommend or would we be better off just throwing local pre-paid SIM cards in each phone. Both phones are 1st gen unlocked so this is an easy fix, though I have a small business and although I'd rather not be contacted I kinda need to be available.

Oh yeah, I know Bali might be a bit touch and go at the moment with the Jemaah Islamiah boys and all, but We've weighed it up and believe we should still go.

Cheers in advance.

I do not know of any specific iPhone apps but you could try the Meebo website; meebo - online web IM for AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Google Talk messengers

It accepts multiple chat accounts and has the added advantage of being able to be accessed from any internet connected device.

It even has a iPhone web interface.

You would be far better off getting some cheap prepay sims, research first.

If you wanted to jailbreak, you could get any IM app and run it in the background with Backgrounder.

Hmm - already jailbroken (have had phones since US launch). Cydia or installer? Crashy?

Are there any free wifi access points near these surf spots?

Otherwise you would still need a SIM card for data

remember that if you get a pre paid sim you need to activate it by putting it in your phone and connecting to iTunes via a computer.

This has been my experience when tavelling with my unlocked optus phone. Not a big issue but you have to find a trust worthy computer that you can disable the synching process on.

I've used this a fair bit and it's really good. Much more reliable than the AIM iPhone app. Recommended
