The stingy thread of free apps awesomeness
Okay people, you know what's up - if you're anything like me you love the free stuff, so share your finds here!
What I have found :
Twittelator - Out of all the Twitter apps I've tried, the best. Easy to upload photos, see tweets from other people in your area - plus it groups multiple tweets from the same friend
Palringo - Best MSN app imo, I've been following the updates and this team seems to work hard - def give it a try - even has various skins available
Remote - Ultimate lazy app? Developed by Apple themselves, this allows you to control your itunes via your iPhone (but not listen to it via your iPhone, there is an app for that which I've forgotten the name of..)
Locly - Find places/restuarants/cinemas etc near you. Good if you're in a new area with a friend and wanna do something..
Urbanspoon - Find local restaurants near you. Even has an awesome random slot machine style feature when you can't make your mind up. Can sort by price and cuisine type.
AroundMe - Another "find shit around you" app, still testing them all atm
Showtimes - Bloody awesome movie times app, works a treat - much easier than navigating greaterunions website on safari
WeightTrack - Track your weight, ponder posting on MacTalk less and buying a bike.. or something..
Go Figure Lite - Has an odd series of helpful easy to fill out equations like "exercise - calories burned", "percentage off in sale" and even "ice needed in a cocktail". Prob not as handy as:
Convertor - Damn simple to use, it's almost the osx unit converter widget for iphone. Find how many miles in a km or pounds in a kg etc
Units - Does the same kind of thing really.. should prob make up my mind and stick with one. Anyone found a definitive reason to stick with one over the other?
IceTV - Even if you don't sign up for a subscription to this popular Aus tv recording service it will tell you for free whats on free to air tv. have to pay for cable channels info
Wikipanion - Helps you navigate wikipedias knowledge easily
TnL - I really dig this app... helps you determine the speed of a storm by the timing difference between lightning / thunder
1password - Stores password info for websites so you don't have to keep entering it
Firemail - Type mail long ways
eBay - self explanitory - finally an official app
Oblique - Great series of odd palmcards to help you think creatively. Awesome when you're stuck for original ideas.
Speed - Find out how fast your trains moving
BOMradar - See a radar map of the clouds above your city
SydTraffic - "Live" access to Sydney RTA traffic cams, helps me see the weather in North Sydney from South Sydney in the morning to.. as a side plus
IOU - keep a track on bar tabs, before your mates start despising you..
myspace - better than facebook
Exposure - Flickr app. Has ads though..
PanoLab - This app is really cool, take multiple photos to make panoramas!
klick - Very cool photo app, the best part is that it shows all the photos taken near you on a map! Also works as a general Flickr app. (Havent decided which Flickr app I like best)
ezimba - literally tonnes of effects to apply to your photos. most are pretty cheesy but hey. id still love a lomography effect app...
Foto Lite - Another Flickr app
More Cowbell - I gotta have more cowbell!
Tap Tap - Probably one of the best free games, its basically like Guitar Hero for iPhone - apparently theres a Nine Inch Nails version in the works
Scratch - Show everyone your dope DJ skills yo
iBanjo - Git yer deliverance awn boy! Yeeha
10 seconds - Need your earphones for this one.. plays sounds from 10 seconds ago.. gives a cool ambient effect alot like:
RjDj single - AWESOME. Using some algorythyms this app records ambient sounds around you and replays them, seemingly in a track - a soundtrack to your life if you will. I was using this and an ice-cream truck drove past and I almost lost my shit. Might seem familiar if you've done hallucinogenic substances.. if you think the app is odd at first youtube the demo vid of the Album version (not free)
midomi - does the same job as:
Shazam - which identifies songs as you play them through the mic. "OH CRAP, WHATS THAT SONG IN THAT CAR AD??!?! I know! Midomi/Shazam to the rescue!". Havent used either really yet so no idea which is better..
Easy relax - More or less does the same job as:
White noise - I think I like this one better... it has a wide selection of ambient sounds to chill out to. I spent a whole train trip listening to the soothing sounds of ocean waves crashing.. probably good for tinnitus sufferers trying to catch 40 winks also
iTM MidiLab - Free midi control program for those of us makin beats / djing / vjing..
Mancala - Play mancala, traditional african game
Morocco - Play the Othello board game.. just been renamed to not have their asses sued basically
Aurora Feint - Fantasy game where you defeat puzzles and build up a character, havent tried it yet tbh
iPint - The ultimate "HEY GUYS, HOW SWEET IS THIS IPHONE THING" app. Girls love it. Basicallay send a glass of tasty tasty beer down a bar table top, careful not to spill it. At the end you "raise a virtual glass" and it pours a beer and you pretend to drink it.. if that sounds wierd just try it, trust me. The app, not beer. Although if you haven't tried beer I highly reccomend you try that too..
CanonGame - Test your artillery prowess.. really easy to pass the time with this, a real thinking app.
Scribble - Draw pretty pictures, also allows you to deface photos of the new guy at work on your iphone
Cradle - its a newtowns cradle.. kind of pointless.. but hey! whee!
BiiBallLite - Send a ball down a 3d course, much better than papijump sheesh
magic8ball - Ask it the tough questions. Because you know, you should totally trust important life decisions to a piece of randomisation software... "should I dump her and crack on to her sister?"
RotaryDialer - Representing the ol skool way of dialling yo, fresh from 1953. or something. yeah.
iBowl - This game is pretty wii like.. flick your iphone around to bowl. A good way to damage your iPhone as one MacTalk member has already found out unfortunately
FS5 Hockey - Almost too much fun to be free, play air hockey! Can also play over WIFI aaanndd two people on the one iphone at the same time. Gotta love multi-touch! Great when drunk..
chesspuzzles - Great when bored. Not full games of chess unfortunately
Lightsaber - These are not the droids you are searching for, but this is prob one of the all time greasest apps you are searching for. Even has theme music, wish it had a Darth Vader creepy voice button.. I'd pay for that
Lux Touch - Um, pretty much like the game of RISK. Kind of confusing.
Cube Runner - Instant easy fun, fly a flying thing through some cube things. Try not to die in horrible twisted wreckage too fast.
Stacks - Cerebral simple game for the wordsmiths, select the correct large word for each question.. surprisingly fun
Twittervision - Helps pass the time.. displays tweets in real time from everyone all over the planet on a big scrolling map
Trace - This thing is awesome, just got into it yestersay.. you draw a way for your little character ( a red block) to get to the end of the level, avoiding obstacles. Very very cool.
PhotoSwap - You take a photo, someone sends one back, so you take another photo, and someone sends back a penis. All fun and games until someone whips out the genetalia but def worth a go

Is this Converter?
Click for full size - Uploaded with plasq's Skitch
Now costs $1.19, so to be true to the "stingy" mantra go with Units.

Sorry gotta disagree here - I didn't find it confusing. Lux Touch is the best game on my iPhone. RISK rules and so does Lux Touch!
===
Some others to add to the list:
ESPN Cameraman - spot the difference game using ESPN sports photos
Four Free - Connect 4
Free Word Warp - how many words can you spell from the 6 letters. Find the 6 letter word within the time limit and you move onto the next level.
Hangman - umm, it's hangman. One or two player.
Memory Match - upturn cards to match the pairs
Sudoko - there's a few free Sudoko's ... I like this one
Qantas - if you fly with them

Great list Donnie Darko! Very helpful.
I would add in Fring (only advantage over Palringo is the ability to make Skype calls over Wifi) and Clinometer (beautiful inclinometer app). Also Pennytel for making cheap VOIP calls while in a Wifi zone.

Labyrinth Lite Edition - good for passing the time, wooden puzzle game where ya roll a ball about and avoid falling into the holes.
MarbleMash - same as above, but instead of a wooden theme, it's bright and colourful
Flipbook Lite - draw stuff and then animate, has some really innovative control features too
Shovel - App that lets you check out the latest from Digg, can browse by various categories, great app, use this one a lot.
TrailGuru - allows you to map where you have been, gives distances times etc, have not tested it yet.
RunKeeper - same as above, have not tested yet
LOLCats FREE - LOL cats, on your phone, has small ads, good for time passing on train
Whip - it's virtual whip, can select different whip noises and types of whips, good for about 30 seconds
Wooo button - press it and it goes 'woooo'
PayPal - works OK
Cowabunga - bounce cows across a river to safety, fun cartoon graphics, controls suck
Australian Postcodes - lets you find postcodes for Australia, works well
Dactyl - diffuse those bombs quick, too late
Knock on Wood - it's a wood panel,tap tap
Fring - still playing with this
Papi Jump - good time passer

Managed to get these for free (legit), not sure if they are all still free tho...
Seismometer - Useless (probably) but cool pub trick.
Air Sharing - Very useful. Use your iPhone as a wireless HDD over WiFi.
Four free - Connect four basiclly. Old skool coolness.
Audi A4 - Name says it all.
Dactyl - Addicitve game. My record is 77 so far, my advice, do not play after a few beers like I did.
Sol Free - Every iPhone needs a card game or two.
Canon Game - Classic shoot the badies with your canon.
Bubble wrap - Pop virtual bubbles. Who wont like this!?!
Wikipanion - Useful to settle pub arguments witout fistycuffs.

Sorry but palringo is a piece of poo really. Any IM client that forces you to sign up to their own stupid messenger program is a bad thing. I miss the old chat program from the jailbreak versions 1.1.4 and before. That was a great app for MSN. I know there is a paid App for around $15 or something stupid for MSN, but I refuse to pay that.
IMHO, there's no *good* IM app for MSN, yet.

Any chance of adding links to these lists? I cannot find Weight Tracker that is for free. Only a paid version.
