AroundMe App on App Store

Just thought I'd share this little app on the App Store. It's called AroundMe. It locates you using the iPhones GPS and tells you where the nearest bank, supermarket or bar is. It works best outside where the GPS can locate you. I tested it at home and it worked well. This app will be very handy for those who travel and need to know where the nearest bank or taxi is.

App Store Link

Quote:
AroundMe allows you to quickly find out information about your surroundings.

How many times have you found yourself in need of finding the closest Gas Station?
AroundMe quickly identifies your position and allows you to choose the nearest Bank, Bar, Gas Station, Hospital, Hotel, Movie Theatre, Restaurant, Supermarket, Theatre and Taxi.

AroundMe shows you a complete list of all the businesses in the category you have tapped on along with the distance from where you are.

For every listing you can choose to see its location on a Map, view the route from where you are, add the information to your contact list or even email the information to a friend.

The Nearby listing allows you to find information using Wikipedia about what is around you.

Fast, easy and accurate. AroundMe is your ideal day to day companion.

Although it has been in the app store for a while, it only recently supported Australia. This is an amazing app that works really well.

This app is incredible. It has a great UI aswell. Within a couple of taps, you can find the nearest supermarket, click on it, go straight to Google maps and get directions. Its great.

It is a good app. works quickly and is reasonably accurate. But like all apps, and services of this kind in general, it is only as good as the data it relies on.

her in Surfers for instance it lists the nearest ANZ bank as either Paradise Waters, or Broadbeach, both 2 kms distant, and does not list the Surfers paradise Branch which is half a km away.

Does work quite well..

A few things I noticed though.. it didn't seem to find any Woolworths supermarkets, only Coles (In WA).

Also, the map function is great how it shows directions etc with the touch of a button, but could be made slightly better if when you exit the map you went back into the program.

But for a free App, it is pretty awesome and will hopefully get better..

The App, like a number of others (eg Locly) uses the Google Maps data to find all the businesses (eg cafes, restaurants etc).

Unfortunately Google's directory listing leaves A LOT to be desired. Just do some searches for around your immediate area and chances are many of the petrol stations, ATMs etc in your immediate vicinity aren't reported by Google, it seems they haven't comprehensibly added a lot of businesses on there.

Truelocal.com.au on the other hand uses the Sensis (yellow pages) data which does seem to contain far more businesses but lacks the ease of use and GPS proximity functions of Google Maps and related applications (eg AroundMe, Locly etc).

Come on Google, improve your POI's....the standalone GPS systems (eg TomTom) have leaps and bounds better POI data than what Google is currently offering.

Google uses TrueLocal for its business listings too.

Edit: After a bit of searching, I don't think Sensis supplies any data to TrueLocal (a News Ltd. company). Maybe you're thinking of WhereIs, the Sensis/Telstra service?

Can't find CIBO coffee shops and I know there is one nearby. Finds nearly every other restaurant and coffee shop in Norwood.

ok 2.0 finds Cibo but now it has advertising. Personally I'd rather pay a fee.
