Maps not working

Can't work out this iphone map thing. I live on the NW coast of tassie, Maps always defaults to some place on the east coast as "my" location.

I phoned Apple support, seemed to fix it, but then it promptly went back to the east coast. Maybe this is because it's warmer there.

Anyone else had this problem?

Also, (dumb question warning) do maps rely on an internet connection to work?

LOL.. I had this problem last night. Maps kept telling me I was at our local racecourse (about 10kms away from our home). My 17yo son thought it was hilarious, as maps on his iphone got him spot on, even putting him at the rear of our roof line, where he was, and then when he moved to the front yard and retried again, his pin moved to the street at front of our home. Meanwhile....I was floating on the other side of town.

After about 10 mins of annoyance, and much ribbing and laughter from my 17yo, suddenly it changed and I got "pinned" at the correct place.

All other times I have used maps, it has been perfect straight away.

My understanding is that it triangulates the position based on cell tower signal strength when GPS is not ready. Certainly this is why mine "drills down" when I do a position search. The only thing I can think of is that somehow you might have a very weak signal on an eastern sector antenna of your local cell tower, so it misreports the information.

Yes, maps does rely on an internet connection from what I can gather. I have not seen any signs of it caching data anywhere. Its a pity, because I would love to do similar to nokia maps, and download a "map pack" for my local area to save data charges.
