iTransit (Public Transport Webapp)
Hi guys and girls,
I've released a new version of iTransit - a public transport web application for Melbourne (currently).
It's focused on just-in-time information; not timetables. So you look up your station/stop and can know how far away the next Train, Tram or Bus is.
Features
- Melbourne: Trains, Trams, Buses, Traffic Conditions
- Sydney: Trains
- Search for stations and stops
- Service Faults: Integrates with available fault lists (ie Connex). Services affected by outages are highlighted
- Favourites: Bookmark any section to your Bookmarks or Home Screens
- Live data where available
- Filter smaller stops
- Filter displayed routes: See specific routes/lines or "all" from your current stop
- Smaller footprint: Lives in your iPhones database for faster loading.
Native App
Just as many requests for a native iPhone application, and its under development!
iPhone Only
Presently it is only for iPhone OS 2.x (inc iPod Touches) - IE/Firefox/iPhone 1.x users will see the old version.
Hopefully the web app should be intuitive enough, there is more help being written though.
iTransit can be found here: http://iphone.itransit.com.au/
Additionally, there is a poll for new features at the blog.
Enjoy!

I get this error message on my 1st Gen iPhone and it won't let me use your site.
"You appear to be using a non-iPhone device."
Funny thing is that your weblink works on my iMac G5 at home.

Yeah sorry about that. At the moment its iPhone 2.x only - the 1.x firmware doesn't support the client side database, which is an integral part of it. I'm working on making it compatible. In the meantime though http://mobile.itransit.com.au/ should still work.

Same error message with mobile.itransit.com.au The weblink just changes back to iphone.itransit.com.au
No sweat, I can wait for 1.1.4 support. Great idea for a website/app though.

Works now for some reason. This is sweet.
Will you be making an App for the Appstore, or something that will work with Installer?

Yeah I saw that you were developing a native app, but was wondering if it was going on the Appstore (requiring FW2.0) or if you will have a version that loads up via installer or older iPhone FW. I know that I am probably in the minority of people who haven't taken the plunge to 2.0, but I just haven't read anything positive about the new FW yet to make me take the plunge.
I guess I can just use it as a web app though, which quite frankly absolutely rocks.

Ahh ok. At this stage it will be an App Store app; want to make full advantage of the Location Service, etc.

Great stuff shiznatz. Used it this morning to great effect.
Of course, the sad fact is that for the foreseeable future the Train times function will be stymied by Connex's pathetic lack of updates for delayed trains on their website.
But that notwithstanding, it was great to see that the few cancellations published by Connex this morning appeared in the app.

Hey great update! Locating the stations in maps is really cool and it looks nice and slick. Main advantage a native app gives you is ability to use GPS to find nearest station/stop/road correct? Can't wait for that one, if you need any help testing I'm a pretty frequent commuter.

GPS is the main feature, but we'll also push the whole timetable into the application, so it only needs to hit the web to get live data.
