Do you need to pay $99 US to debug your app on ur iphone???

Yes..
Am software developer by trade but am in the Java sphere of things..
however I want to learn coco ..downloaded the iphone sdk and while connecting my iphone xCode detected my phone and asked me if I will use it for debugging..
said yes..and now i can have access to crash logs, normal system logging on my iphone..very cool..
however there was a + button for adding apps..
i compiled a simple app on xCode and wanted to port it to my iphone..
it came with errors..that it couldnt upload it to my iphone..i saw the logs and said something bout the app not being signed?!?
so do i have to pay $99 to Apple to give me some sort of a key ?? for me to upload apps on my iphone?!?!? is this the case??

Yep.
You need to pay to join the developer program to get your programs listed on the App Store and to place applications onto real live iPhones.

You can use the simulator for free though.

How does it go against the definition of freeware?
Apple still lets you give away your software for free, you just need to pony up US$99 a year.

I'm not saying charging $99 is fair or right or anything like that (although I happen to think it's reasonably priced), but to say that free ware is somehow impeded by Apple is wrong.

Just a suggestion, but it might be a good thing if Mactalk purchases an individual license as a company and allow its members to publish free apps only through mactalk.

If you want to create an app just for yourself, then the options are to pay $99, find a friend who has the license and get your friend to provide you with a provisioning license, or go down the path of jailbroken phones. A lot of work has gone into providing the SDK and getting your app out to the AppStore so I see the $99 value. One thing I don't like about the SDK is the lack of documentations on what libraries are available that runs on the iPhone vs Simulator.

My suggestion to the OP is to fully use the simulator and get used to using xcode, the debugger, and the console to get the app you want to create. If you really don't want to pay the $99, shoot me a PM and I'll help you run your app on your iPhone.

That $99 Apple is pocketing for the developer license probably goes some way in explaining why Apple is populating the App Store with 90% drivel.

That's a nice income stream from people posting mind numbingly useless apps..

You also get code level technical support for your $99. Which is worth a lot considering everyone is still under NDA and cannot post blog articles on all the gotchas.

At the moment, I'm only coding for personal use, so I haven't paid the $99. I'm already jailbroken, so it is just a matter of transferring the binary manually, then signing it with a line in mobileterminal. Annoying to do this each time (I could probably automate it though), and I don't get "on-device" debugging, but works great otherwise.

Once I decide to share my apps with others, I'll have to get a dev account though I guess.

didnt know that you could develop..using official SDK???
or are u using toolchain ?
Is it true that ToolChain apps do look very much alike to the official SDK apps in term of source code?

Using the toolchain allows you to access certain frameworks that the SDK doesn't. Depending on what kind of app you are doing, you may or may not need this access (probably not, unless you want to run in background or access hardware etc).

I've not used the toolchain personally, so I'm not sure how close it is to the SDK otherwise. I'm using SDK. Just compile to device like normal in xcode, but transfer and fake-sign as mentioned above. Hopefully Apple doesn't chase me down, but I don't think they will, it being personal use and all. Without the official certificate though, you can only ever distribute to other jailbroken phones, and if you do that, Apple may get upset too. So the $99/yr is probably worth it overall for anything other than personal use IMO.
