Backing up Apps from the App Store

Hey, just out of curiosity, how do you backup the apps that you've purchased on your phone. When I plug it into iTunes, there isn't a section saying "Purchased on iPhone". Nothing but a black page when I click on Applications. Am I doing something wrong here?
I haven't been able to find an answer anywhere on this.

I believe you are able to download any applications you have purchased any number of times.

It wants to charge me again for the same app though.

If you right-click on your iPhone in the left column of iTunes, there is an option to transfer purchases. The wording may be different but I can't check it as I am typing this from my iPhone

Nope. Says you can download it again for free. This has been known since before FW2.0 or the iPhone 3G was released :P
