Enterprise application distribution

Has anyone heard anything more about the distribution of apps without the App Store (originally for enterprise purposes).

I'm wondering if in future this method will allow users to install Apps that Apple won't allow on the app store. A la emulators.

The way I gather it to work is that you need to apply to Apple to get this Enterprise App Store software (and pay for it). Then you are free to use it to distribute apps via iTunes to certain computers (probably hooked up to Open Directory).

So technically, yes, you can put on an emulator, as Apple won't monitor what you do with it within your company. However, getting this to work at home, on your local computer, will be A) illegal and B) not easy.

There is a limit on how many phones can have the software though, something like 100. This limits its usefulness.

Even on the Enterprise store? That's stupid - what if my enterprise has 1,000 iPhone users?

Have a look at the keynote again. Its ad hoc that is limited to 100 users. See Macrumors coverage of WWDC 08:

Quote:
Adding a third way to distribute apps -- Ad Hoc. The apps can be distributed in any way to up to 100 authorized iPhones.
Enterprise:

Quote:
Enterprises can distribute apps just to their employees. They authorize iPhones within their enterprise and then create applications that just run on those phones. The apps can be distributed just through their intranet.
Doesn't sound like there is any limit.
