BETA: Tram Tracker for iPhone

A chap on Twitter has made a pretty snazzy app for Melbourne iPhone users that takes advantage of Yarra Tram's Tram Tracker service.

It is available here: Tram Tracker
Use it on your iPhone for full effect.

We talked about it on the latest podcast too and I reckon it's super awesome

Enter in the Tram Tracker ID for the stop you're waiting at or plan to go to and it will return the route number and the ETA of the tram.

It's still in testing and isn't all that obvious to use, but I thought I'd share it anyways!

This is fully awesome. I'm waiting for my 3g iphone but hopefully we will get it on that either via appstore or jailbreaking down the track. The first thing I did when I was able to try a friends 2g iphone was go to the existing tramtracker website to see if it works in safari and it does beautifully, which saves on all those 55c sms's i send at the moment. Also the sms's are notoriously unreliable as well.

EDIT I didn't realise it was just a web page! That is AWESOME!!! I've put it as a favourite and have it on my Nokia 6120 until I get my iphone next week

To the developer you are my hero. I sold my car in March last year and so Trams/Trains are my primary mode of transportation.

Hopefully a mobile train timetable will come out for iphone as well at least for melbourne. Connex/Metlink have been pretty slack in that regard so far, however.

Alleluia! I've been thinking about something like this for ages. It'd be cool if it could remember your stop IDs, saves trying to remember them.

EDIT: Scratch that last comment, it does!

Glad you guys dig the tram tracker, although I think of it more as a proof-of-concept than anything else; the point was to demonstrate a web application that, when bookmarked on the home screen, functioned in a similar way to the native widgets.

Anyhoo, I'll roll out an update for non-iPhone/iTouch devices in the next couple of days.

Cheers,

Leslie

I don't think Melbournes trains are available tracked live anywhere online, which is a shame. It would be nice if there was a simple interface that connected to the same thing that powers the signs and voice boxes at stations that you could say "when is the next train leaving Richmond Platform 4" or something like that.

^edit, Thanks Leslieawesome! it actually doesn't work on my nokia 6120 running opera mini 4.1 (I get a "nothing to see here" message. But after next friday (assuming I survive the iphone hoards) that won't be an issue anyway.

Kinda cool. I worked on the launch of tramTRACKER but Yarra Trams have moved on since.

Never actually used the service because I don't catch much public transport but it will be handy to have the code of the one stop I do use occasionally and not have to use sms.

Edit: Just gave it a go. That's great that it saves your recently tracked numbers.

This would be great as a real app, use the GPS to locate to closest tram stop and load the appropriate tram information.

What a complete waste of time and effort.

Trams come and go every few minutes during daylight hours so why bother?

It's just another money scam for Connex, time to wake up and smell the coffee!

1) Yarra Trams runs the trams, not Connex
2) In the CBD, sure, and maybe on other lines, but during the afternoon they aren't so often. Past 7PM they aren't so often either. Weekends are also sparse.
3) How is a free service a money scam? How is a service not even run by the company (a 3rd party made it), a scam?
