Im a three customer and would love to use my sim (if it worked), but the data charges would really start to hurt.
Ive looked into it and the Virgin $10 for 300meg looks the go here. Their website says that although they have 3g, it will work on old 2.5g handsets, so obviously this being GPRS I would assume it would work with the iPhone.

Any news on weather a three sim even works? I'm not concerned about data, I'm just going to be using this thing for calls/sms.
I'm dying to know

Some who works for 3 said in a forum somewhere here or on whirlpool (sorry Im following sooo many forums on this damn unlock) said that although using the 3 sim inthe iphone would mean you are roaming, the price it costs 3 for roaming calls is the same as their own costs, so from the point of view of 3, they wouldnt/shouldnt care.
But yes, the big question still remains. Will the 3 sim work. I recently sold my old iPhone to a guy who has now had it fully unlocked via a hardware unlock. Ill message him and ask him if he knows anyone on 3 and if so, can he test it. That will however be with the hardware unlock, so thats something to keep in mind. Ill post as soon as I hear anything.

I just got a reply from my friend who got the hardware unlock. He cant try out the 3 sim, as the hardware unlock is specifically for the sim he has. This is what he said 'This is where the hardware unlock is a let down. Cant put another sim in as it has a file you need to change in the phone with the SIM 16 CCID number. It easy to do if you know how to do it but i dont and they don't have the software for MAC to do this on otherwise i would be doing it. '
I guess we will have to verify this from someone else.

I'm running mine on Optus and it works well.
The other one we unlocked is running Vodafone and it runs like shit - the connection to the carrier drops out after phone calls and other random oddities. Yet another one we unlocked the other day didn't work with the guys 3 SIM, so as far as I know so far, Three (3) SIM's don't work at present - not sure why this is. The best experience we've had so far is with Optus, although I imagine Telstra would be just as good and better because of the EDGE support. I've actually found GPRS through the iPhone quite tolerable though. |

I'll find out at the end of the month TBH ;D
I'm figuring it will be quite steep, but might up the plan then. Really in a mobile sense you don't use it all that much, but with apps like Stocks and Weather (although this seems to be a bit off, as during the day it displays a nighttime icon and at night vice versa, plus the days seem off). That said, I'm happy to up my plan if I want to use it for useful purposes - checking mail is one, but I need to figure out how to get it to sync the read status of mail messages better - might need to switch to IMAP. All of that said, I know even with a few visits on my N95 (which is the first phone I've actually used GPRS and 3G functionality on) cost a lot - so yes, it's not gonna be a painless experience for the wallet. |

Has anyone got it working on Virgin Mobile?
I know they're owned by Optus and all, I'm just curious as to whether their SIMs will be compatible with the Super/Turbo SIM methods. I ask mainly because their data plans are far and away the best around (though not as good as their initially promised $10 for 1GB plan). |

OK.
After a few days of testing my hardware unlock I can confirm that 3 DOESN'T work. It appears to have to do with the way iPhone picks a carrier, as the roaming network (Telstra) is never picked up, and trying to search manually results in an error. I don't know a huge amount about SIM technology, but if there is a way to flag 2G mode only on the SIM card itself (my m600i does it on the handset) then we may be in business. This is pretty doubtful though. All other GSM networks however, do work, and I have tested Telstra, Optus, Virgin, Voda. |
