1) Call Optus and enable international roaming.
2) Change your APN to nonsense using this tool: APN Changer
3) Roam
4) ...profit?

i took mine to singapore and vietnam, and most charges were on roaming, rather than the calls i think. i had absolutely no data use, i made sure of that (2g iphone).
fully ask what you could end up paying.... i think the roaming is the killer

Yes - both GSM and 3G data will be disabled if you put in a nonsense APN.

To make sure you don't incur data charges when roaming, go to Settings -> General -> Network, and make sure "Data Roaming" is turned off.
You can find more info on roaming providers in NZ here: GSM Roaming - New Zealand. Looks like Vodafone NZ provide roaming services to Australian Optus customers on both their GSM and 3G network. You can see a GSM coverage map here and a 3G coverage map here.
Optus has a page about using your mobile overseas here. You need to make sure AutoRoam is enabled. If you want to use data on your phone, you can enable it in the iPhone settings I mentioned above. Dta charges when roaming in NZ look to be 2¢ per KB.

Could somebody please explain the benefits of using the APN changer tool mentioned by Exocet above instead of simply turning off the Data Roaming setting?
I think I might be missing something here...
(I'm locked to Optus and want to take my iPhone travelling with me to the UK. To avoid nasty roaming data charges I can live with occasional Wi-Fi access for data over there, but I want to keep phone and SMS abilities active.)
Thanks.

I don't think there is any reason is use an APN changer. Stopping nasty overseas data roaming charges is the reason that data roaming setting is available in the iPhone software. I think the other method is simply what people resorted to prior to this setting coming available in the more recent iPhone OS updates (I think it appeared in 2.0).

Yes, that's what I thought...
But such a recent mention of APN changer made me think that perhaps the Data Roaming switch wasn't enough!
Cheers.

My Data Roaming is permanently switched off and I've used the iPhone for voice only calls (in and outgoing) without incurring any data roaming charges. I'm on Three but have not found the need to change my APN settings at all.

No, it just changes the cellular data access point.
