No longer able to use Mail on iPhone

Hey all

I am used to having Safari crash on my iPhone but now I can't get Mail to run at all, I just get a blank screen with the new mail icon bottom right and refresh icon bottom left and then the app dies. It has been working fine up until the last couple of days.

Have tried my first DFU/reset and restored, mail then worked once and then went back to hang and crash.

Anyone had similar or any suggestions on how to bring it back to life?

Its a 3g iPhone with Voda and has the latest 2.1

I have 5 emails setup, 4 of them are IMAP Googles and the other is a mobile me. I only do manual pulls of email.

Thanks

It might be a pain but try and remove all of your mail accounts and re-add them.

Just trying that now via Settings -> Mail, Contact, Calendars - I select a mail account and then Delete Account, now Settings is crashing. The Delete takes ages then it drops out and back to the home screen but the account does get deleted.

Just called Apple and got phone support straight away. Their suggestion was to plug the phone into another computer and set up as a New iPhone. Then try a mail account and see if it works or not. If it does then there is an issue with the backed up mail data on the main Mac that this is connected to.

Not looking good either way and a serious pain.

Let's start again, try a restore through iTunes. This will re-configure the phone to factory settings and 'start a fresh'.

See if this helps,

Chris.

Thanks Chris

OK done, its back to its original state. Now restore from a previous backup? I have 2 to choose from:

Dave's iPhone (is the default)
Dave's iPhone - 19/10/2008 8:10PM (is in the drop down)

Does the default have any date?

Did you want to restore from back-up? Or we can just re-sync everything.

Default has no date, just the other one.

So can I select "Set up as new phone" and still get all my music, contacts and iTunes app purchases copied across, I guess I can.

I have a feeling the backup just restores something bad in mail.

So setup as new phone?

Thanks for your help with this.

I'm thinking setup as a new phone, if you're okay with re-syncing all your music, contacts, applications, etc.

After this, go into the Preferences, select Mail and configure your e-mail account once again. Fingers crossed it works, or else we have a problem.

Disconnected then reconnected the iPhone and it got past that error and finished the remaining sync of music.

Sync'd the emails and so far it looks good. Thanks for your advice Chris, I will see how this goes.

I didnt realise it would be that easy to get the phone back to normal after selecting "new iPhone".

No good, back to crashing again. Managed to use mail for an hour or so this morning on the train but now it is back to hanging with a blank screen before mail crashes.

A tad annoying as mail is the thing I use the most on my phone.

After searching around, I uncovered that many iPhone users are affected by Mail crashes and so forth due to using Google Gmail accounts.

Try number 1 & 2 potential fixes in the quote below.

See if this helps in anyway.

If you have experienced or are experiencing these problems, there are 3 potential fixes:

1) Try resetting your network settings: Settings > General > Reset Network Settings
2) Try Changing your Password. Go to Gmail on your Mac or PC and change the account password. Then, delete the Gmail account from your iPhone and set it up from scratch again.

3) As a last resort… Try restoring your iPhone in iTunes.

Chris.
Thanks mate for those links, its a serious pain.

I called Apple support but didnt get much joy there either. What seems to work most of the time is:

In Settings -> Mail/Calendar is set each account to inactive, although when I do this it hangs and crashes Mail/Calendar settings.

Then power off and power on.

Then re-activate one account at a time and check the mail for each.

That works for a while. Seems to be a bit of an issue working with Gmail IMAP and being linked to Mail on the Mac being synced. Bloody annoying, but still love my phone :-)

Does Mail work fine without having any trace of a Gmail account?
