Apple store guys can tell its been water damaged by looking in the headphone jack. There is a water sensor that turns red when it is wet. So they cannot replace it without paying a fee.

I was recently pushed into a pool with my iPhone in the pocket. I'm going to optus and paying the $100 excess for a new one on insurance.

Good luck.

If I'm not mistaken, the iPhone does have things inside that change colour when water has entered it (I think I saw it somewhere, don't quote me). So they'll know if it has been subjected to water.

Look here:
Hardmac.com : Le "Macbidouille" in English

I wouldn't lie about it.
Most phones have a coloured patch inside the phone that changes coiour after a dunking. It MAY be possible to fix, but not worth the cost...

It should be covered under Optus Safeguard as accidental damage.

Yeh that hopefully will be the case. Has anybody been through this procedure with Optus before?

I assume I will have to ring them up and send the phone away. Knowing insurance companies it will take weeks/months. It is foolish me thinking that Optus World can replace it on the spot right?

If only the insurance was done through Apple and their Apple Stores

It's having no iPod at the moment that has hurt me the most lol, everybody has a spare mobile lying around

The phone still seems to be unresponsive and it's sitting in a bag of rice. It has never looked cleaner.

The process normally has optus taking the phone and then contacting the insurance company and making the claim.

The process can take anywhere from 1 to 4weeks depending on who you get from what I have read.

Me either! I once had Optus insurance on a phone i had but I lost it and because I didn't know where I lost it they wouldn't pay up, can you believe that? If I knew where I lost it it wouldn't be lost, would it? Needless to say I have never paid for this type of insurance again, my phones are covered under hours and contents now ...

Yayz!

Just spoke to Optus over the phone, the phone is covered, they charged me the $100 excess and it should be available for pickup on Friday!

A lot quicker than I was expecting, 9 day turnaround...

...maybe Optus aren't so bad.

On an unrelated/related topic, i accidentally left my Canon 40D DSLR camera out in the backyard for 4 nights... it rained twice that week including a heavy storm.

The Camera was soaked but by the time i found it, it had dried almost entirely apart from some condensation behind the display... too this day it works fine, you wouldn't have even known i had done it.

Makes me really glad i paid the premium for a camera with weather sealing and a high build quality.

Never lie, if not for moral reasons (i.e: being nice), then just because lying often goes wrong and when the shit hits the fan, you're the one covered in excrement.

If you believe the Optus PDF supports the insurance claim, make sure you take that with you to the Optus store.

If you're quick, you might be able to take it around a few stores to see if any of the staff will honour the insurance.

If you do leave it for a few days in rice, remember the battery is likely to be flat. The first thing you want to do is try and sync it, if that doesn't work then you're stuffed (which I suspect you are anyhow, but hey it's worth a shot and miracles do happen).

What happened with that... did your so called "mate" cough up for the excess? Is he still your "mate"?
