Youtube on iPhone = painfully slow loading

I'm finding it takes ages (minutes) for youtube videos to load on my new iPhone 3G and on my previous iPhone, both over home wireless.

The same videos take seconds to load on my Macbook over the same wireless connection.

Does anyone else find this?

Yes. The YouTube app is very slow for me. But think about what it has to do on a phone, compared to a MacBook. It must connect to YouTubes servers, locate the video, stream the content, resize it for the iPhone then display the video.

Solution: use 3G network.

I know it sucks when we don't have limited data plans, but when YouTube videos stream over 3G they appear to lower the bit rate and it is much faster.

Solution: use 802.11b

I have the same problem. These guys have worked out the cause:

YouTube Really slow on iPhone - iPhone

Summary: it seems to be a bug (no surprise there) - network performance is woeful if you are connected to a wireless access point that is *too fast* - as if the iphone is not keeping up. If you (a) change your home access point to use 802.11b only (not 802.11g) or (b) move far enough away from the access point that you have less than full reception (believe me...) then you'll notice a huge leap in network performance. and youtube will go from unusable to flawless.

I can confirm that this issue still exists with the new 2.1 beta, um, I mean software update.

You can file this with apple here:
