Question Rather Major iPhone Issue

Ok, lately my iPhone battery has been stuffing up (charging). Every time I let the battery drain to 0, I get stuck on the black screen telling me to plug the phone into power. Then, once I do, the black screen remains the same but with a charging icon under the red battery.

From what I have read, this should stay there until the battery actually does 'start charging', which is about 2 - 10 minutes. For me, about 10 hours. No joke. This time, I was surfing the net when my battery just hit 10%. So, I plugged it in to the AC adapter and immediately the battery icon said it was fully charged .

I have experienced that alot when charging but most of time it changed to charging status and then back to fully charged, but still charged completely in the end. So, when I plugged it in, the phone didn't charge because it thought it was fully charged. I woke up in the morning to find that it was on the black screen with the flat battery icon. I tried removing the power, plugging it into my computer, reseting, everything. Nothing worked, the phone was dead.

I put my sim in my old phone for the day and came back 8 hours later to find that it didn't charge at all. I spoke to my dad and he said we should take it back because I have had a lot of problems with the battery. Before I do, any suggestions? I apologize about the long thread but I wanted to be as detailed as possible.

Cheers,
Tom

P.S, I am with Optus and I have a PC if that makes any difference at all.

Sure is mate. Just wanted to make sure I'm not missing anything before I do.

Update: Sorry for the double post but my iPhone just woke up and is charging, but still, it shouldn't take more than 10 hours to start charging. I should still return it.

Definitely return it.

One thing though, have you tried changing USB ports or maybe even using a different USB cable? Might be a faulty cable or port.

If it's not any of those then return it.

I've heard of people who let their phones go completely flat having it take aeons to recharge the phone. I've never let my phone go completely flat and it woudl probably never happen anyway. Also It's probably not a good thing to do with a brand new phone either.

Having said that it does sound like you rphone might have a problem. I'd take it back but in future don't let it go completely flat if at all possible.

I've never let my 3G go completely flat but I used to let my 2G one go flat all the time and it always kicked back on after 5 - 10 minutes on the red battery of death screen.

Yes. I agree with you. But what happened is that my phone was at 10% battery, then I plugged it into a power source at it said it was fully charged and did not charge. Then it went flat and blah blah blah. Also, in response to the previous reply, I have tried all USB ports on my computer and have tried different power sources aswell as my sisters iPod nano cable. Nothing. Thanks anyway guys.

You've most likely fucked the battery up a bit by letting it lose all it's charge. Get daddy to get it back to where you bought it.

As far as I know, which I could be wrong, if you should never let a Lithium-Ion battery drain completely. If you completely discharge a lithium-ion battery, it is ruined, as it always requires the electrons to be moving. Lithium-ion batteries prefer a partial discharge. They do not have "memories," so you won't screw it up by only charging it up when it's half full.

Just don't let it fall to zero and you should be fine.

This also happens to other people, not just you:

I thought this was a good thing to do, but I was wrong. Lithium-ion batteries (in the iPhone) do not like to be drained to 0%. I did this twice and both times I was stuck on the battery charging screen for 8+ hours. It said it was charging, but wasn't. Think of it like a car engine. If it is really cold and stalls, it may take some effort to start up. Same with a battery. If it is drained, it may take a while to start charging, if it even does.

Partial charges don't hurt
This is another thing I learnt. Lithium-ion batteries do not have memory, meaning that if you give your iPhone short charges and dis-charges, it won't be affected.

Oh God, for the last time people, I did not let the battery fall to zero. It thought it was fully charged and wouldn't charge. And Aaron, I understand I am 14 but please do not talk to me like I am a baby.

Cheers

The moral of the story is that Apple need to include a much better battery meter in the next firmware. You don't get enough warning really until you hit 20%, which kind of sucks.

Sounds like your battery is stuffed - and with it all the internal calibration/charge status settings. Just take it back and get a replacement.
