Iphone - 3 sim INVALID :(
Hey guys, been pottering around the Internet for days trying to figure out why my three sim will not work and a friend suggested I post on here.
I have just recently bought an Optus 16GB Iphone and had it unlocked (it was unlocked from the guy I bought it off). I have taken it home and put my Three sim in it and am getting no reception, and when I turn it off and back on I am getting invalid SIM.
I rang three and after speaking with the people there I was advised that I need special iphone SIM, which I figured that they were just trying to get me onto one of their plans. I have since put an Xseries pack on my service and added the APN settings manually through unlockit.nz, but no data will flow.
I have put in my Optus SIM and it works fine, I have also used a Telstra SIM and it seems to work fine. When my 3 SIM is in there I can not choose a carrier, or add any APN settings. When every other SIM is in there I can select the carrier (Vodafone, Telstra or Optus), but no 3.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated; this is really doing my head in!!!!

Does your 3 sim work in another handset? It could be a faulty SIM Card.

Is it the original iPhone or the new 3G model?

If it is the 3G iPhone, try doing a restore with the new firmware and see if it helps.
On the off chance you have the 2G iPhone, then it won't work.

I know, but he bought it from some one else, and there's been some dodgy bastards on eBay with suss sales mentioning 3G iPhone, but the listing was actually for the 2G

I have this issue. But my iPhone will accept 3 sims, not optus sims - which sucks as i just transferred to virgin thinking my iphone would work fine.
(Was unlocked via Vodafone - Virgin Sim not working in my iPhone 3g Unlocked from Vodafone.)

3 are trying to tell me I have to get a new sim card and it will work.
this sounds like crap to me.
I have been given the following instructions from telstra, whom I bought the Iphone outright without a sim. If i follow these will I be able to use my current 3 sim card?
1. Tether their device to computer loaded with the latest iTunes release software 7.7
2. Ensure they are connected to the internet
3. Within iTunes under iPhone > Summary tab click on 'Check for updates'
4. Back up the device and check that all your applications & iTunes are listed in the relevant sections of iTunes.
5. Click on 'Restore to factory settings'. This may take a couple minutes.
5. Do initial sync with iTunes then Power Cycle Unit.
6. Plug back in and Sync.
7. Power down, change SIM and power up
If you they are planning to put a SIM of an operator that is not currently supported (ie not Optus, Voda or 3), the data settings will not be loaded and you will need to contact your service provider to obtain correct settings & process. This is due to the device being configured for Optimised experience with approved carriers by Apple.
Thanks guys

As i said above - my iPhone works with 3 100% fine, but won't accept Optus sims at all.
It never downloaded any carrier settings for 3 at all, nor did i ever contact them, i just got a random prepaid sim and it worked fine. ...So i'm not sure if the above will work.

Well, what i've done is ring up Vodafone again and have asked them to attempt to unlock it again from Apple - they've sent an email off, so i'll see what happens there next week sometime. It seems that the unlock don't fully work sometimes... I'm unsure.

Do what telstra said. Sync the phone and get all your data & pics off, then restore it.
Also do a search for the 3 thread which covers setting it up for data.
I think 3 are just trying to lock you into a contract or something.

I just used these exact instructions for mine and it did nothing...
Pretty sure the unlocks can be dodgy :S
Vodafone/Telstra and Three all work for me, but Optus/Virgin don't.
And i'm signed to a 99 topless virgin plan as of a few days ago
