Optus iPhone sim as mobile internet

Hi everyone!

Maybe slightly off topic under "iPhone Help and Support" but my query is about the iPhone sim card from Optus. I have done a quick search but could not find anything similar.

My folks are off to Darwin for a while and want to be able to access the internet while they are away. I offered to let them use my Optus iPhone sim card in one of their 'three' sony ericsson phones (as I have 500mb of data on my plan).

I have managed to get the sim working in a 'three' SE K800i and have managed to connect it up to a windows laptop for mobile internet to show that it actually can be done.

However I was wondering if this breaks any terms and conditions with the Optus iPhone sim card? I have had a quick look at the T&C at Optus, however my brain tends to go to sleep reading those kind of documents and I was hoping someone here would know.

As long as they are in an Optus 3G area, is it OK for them to use my Optus iPhone sim card in a phone that isn't an iPhone for mobile broad band purposes?

Thanks

mrman

From my understanding, Optus doesn't like it when you use your iPhone sim in a non-iPhone handset.

It states in the FAQ that,

Can anyone connect to the ‘yes’ Cap, 'yes' Timeless or 'yes' Plans for iPhone 3G?

A: No, to be eligible you must either already have an iPhone 3G or purchase an iPhone 3G with an Optus ‘yes’ Cap, 'yes' Timeless or 'yes' Plan for iPhone 3G.
I think they just downgrade to to an equivalent rate plan if it detects that your SIM is being used in a non-iPhone for a long period of time, however I think it'll have to be picked up manually by someone though as suppose their system doing it automatically.

I just got off the phone with Optus (I know, I know that's what I should have done in the first place!)

The gist of what they were saying agrees with your comment. They were saying that as the data is not going through the safari browser that it will be charged separately, although I don't know if this is 100% accurate but not willing to risk it.

Will look into prepaid sim card prices that include data instead.

Please help me because I'm on the same boat.
