Problems with data on iPhone - Optus 3G sim

A friend of mine just acquired an iPhone from Optus outright (it was a as new returned handset), she is currently an Optus business customer and at the time of buying the iPhone added a 1G data pack to her service.

The sim she has is a standard yellow Optus 3G, same as the working one in my phone (mine came from my prepaid service)

When she tries to use data she gets an error saying she is not subscribed to a data service etc...etc..

When she rang Optus she was told she must be on a n iPhone plan for it to work, which to me sounds like ignorance, does anyone know what needs to be done to make it work ? is it an APN setting change on the sim card or ?

My apologies if this has been covered before, I read through the FAQ and what looked like relevant threads but nothing specifically relating to this case.

Isn't the Optus APN just 'internet'?

How did she get a 'returned' handset from Optus? At a store?

I have no idea

Got lucky aparently, customer bought it, wasn't what they wanted, returned it, don't know any more than that.

Edit: I just realised it sounds a bit dogy but it was through an Optus business dealer, not stolen or anything

i just re-did my plan with optus. I was on a old $49 cap fleet plan (business) and rang them yesterday and was put onto the new $49 business smart cap plan. I also had added, the 1G data bolt on ($29.99 - month to month), but am still unsure whether or not this will apply for my 1st gen iPhone.

So far, two phone calls to optus customer service, gave me two different replies. One person said the 1gig plan WONT work, cause its only for 3G phones, and the lady yesterday said it will work on any phone, just at the slower speed.

Walked into a store today and checked, and the guy behind the counter said the same thing. Its ok for a first gen iphone, just the slower speeds will apply.

Just makes me wonder about the plans now, I am on a $49 cap, with 1gig of data tacked on for $30.

Am tinkering around with data now to confirm and check back with optus to see if its covered under my 1gig / month

All sorted now.. she rang optus and had a little spat at them, the guy said he would need to change the server (??) that she was using.

All fine now.
