When I got my iCamera and phone attachment from Optus it came with several bayonet mounted lenses... NOT!
What is interesting is that there is a "jailbroke" application that worked on the 1st gen phone that really enhanced the capabilities of the iPhones more than adequate little "take a memory" camera.
It's called Camera PRO - I am hoping that they develop it for the 3G...
It allows you to use a timer, to zoom your shot, to take multiple frames. Nice little app.
you can learn more at:
Software for iPhone and iPod, PSP, Pocket PC, Palm, Nokia, TomTom, Mobile Phones
Cheers...

Thanks Mate,
Looks like a handy little app, and yes, may make things much nicer with things as they currently are.

I don't they are attempting to assassinate, a difference in opinion is what I read, if you can't handle objective discussion that's fine, but don't blow up when someone responds to a question in a way you don't like.
I'm sure the phone camera could be upgraded, but it'll cost you more than you paid for your iPhone, so either sit tight, or go buy a phone that does all what you want, and donate your iPhone to a worthy cause.

I'm leery of too much convergence. Still, I like having the camera, and though it's not great, I know that it could be improved with software. I mostly use it to take reference photos, like a DVD I want to buy or to tell a friend that a CD is now available. I take potshots occasionally just for the hell of it and sometimes I even keep them. To me, it's all about taking a picture of what's in front of me as information, not art.

By the way, I think if the camera were added to the iPod Touch, it would make it a much more useful device. I predict this will occur this year.

interesting prediction, although i don't believe it will happen.
apple need to keep the touch and the iphone different enough, or there won't be a market for the two items.

Mallo: We weren't 'assassinating' anyone or anything, simply explaining that what you want to achieve is pretty much pointless. ANYTHING is possible if you have enough money or skills, but do you REALLY want to do it? Are you REALLY so opposed to carrying around a small point-and-shoot camera that you can slip into a jacket pocket, which will take photos a lot better than an iPhone even with an upgrade, save you battery life, and cost heaps less than trying to upgrade your iPhone camera. Not to mention you won't void your warranty. There's just so many reasons not to do it. You can't honestly expect us all not to express our thoughts on the matter.
If you're STILL set on doing it, then I honestly doubt anyone on these forums will be able to help you. Seems like we all love our iPhones far too much to hack 'em to bits. Maybe try asking a modding community for some help?
Japester: Totally agree with your point about using the iPhone camera to take pics for information purposes rather than as 'art'. That's how I use mine, as well. Sometimes for happy snaps where I don't care for the quality, but usually as a reference for something. Works well.
As for your prediction of a camera in the iPod Touch, how much do you want to bet on it? :P

I'm not betting anything, but it seems logical to me. All the apps that need a photo feel lame when all you can use are photos already synced from iPhoto. Adding a camera wouldn't make it that much more like an iPhone. I've done a thought piece on this on my blog.

I think it would, and that's precisely the reason they won't do it. They'll be keeping the Touch and the iPhone as separate as possible. If the iPod Touch included a camera, many people would seriously re-think their 'need' to upgrade to an iPhone.
The iPod Touch is still just an iPod afterall. A very awesome PDA-like iPod, but an iPod all the same.
S'ok, we'll just agree to disagree on this one.

Hey while on the Camera subject, How cool would it be if you could take one of those Wireless SD Cards and upload the pics from say a Nikon D80 directly to your iPhone.
I often have to take hi res pics on site for work and it would be awesome to have the option to send quick low res pics to the office via the picture upload function
