Gmail Contacts on the Iphone

Hey All,

I have just setup Google apps to try out and see if my it will work for me.

Now....

I have my Contacts on my Mac syncing with Google just fine...
I have my Iphone using mail at google via IMAP just fine...

But the question is... can I get my contacts to Sync to my Iphone??

I am no after push, as I check my mail manually.

Any help would be great.

Cheers

iTunes > iPhone
Connect your iPhone to your Mac.

Go to Info > Contacts > Sync Google Contacts.

Info is the tab up top.

Hi Huy,

Can I ask how it will work?

If I change a contact on my Macbook Pro... I know it will go to Google Contacts, but then how does that change get to my iPhone??

Your Mac will sync with Google Contacts. This will update the Address Book on the Mac. The Mac will then put these updates onto the iPhone, as if the contacts had been created using Address Book rather than Google Contacts.

The change gets to your iPhone when you sync and make the physical USB connection. Just like the current state for example, if you play a song on your iPhone, then these changes will be reflected on your iTunes library on your Mac, for example the "Recently played" playlist will be updated. Or if you watch a movie on your iPhone, then it will be updated and marked as "viewed" on your Mac once you update and sync.

Same goes for contacts. Changes made on the Mac (Book Pro) will be brought across onto your iPhone when you Dock/connect and sync it.

This is a different story if you have MobileMe, of course.

AHA!! That was the bit I was looking for...
So what you are saying is that I would need to physically connect the phone via USB.

I was hoping this could be done over the air... a bit like MobileMe.

Is there anything that can do that for me?

From what you've told me, I assume you have the last checkbox ticked, inside Address Book:

So then from the iPhone's point of view, the contacts pulled from Google, to Address Book, will be no different to contacts originally created in Address Book (without the Google Sync). That is my interpretation and understanding.

Yes, physical USB connection will be required for contact changes to be reflected on the iPhone, if made via a MacBook Pro, without the use of MobileMe and solely Address Book with Google Synchronization enabled (checked, above).

-- If you want something over the air like MobileMe, then my suggestion is to purchase MobileMe since that is one of its selling points.

Otherwise, I have no answers or solutions for you sorry, since I physically plug my iPhone in as well for two reasons, anyway.

1. Charge.
2. Sync.

If I'm not doing one, I'm doing the other, the single connection serves dual purposes for me so I don't worry about any over-the-air business (I have no data plan) and it suits my needs/methods.
