iPhone doesn't know where I am!

I finally got my iPhone yesterday - albeit after a 500km round trip to my nearest Telstra store - but I am very happy with it.

However, I've noticed one slight issue - I am in Goondiwindi, but when I hit the location button in Maps, it tells me I'm in Surfers Paradise (I wish!) - 370km away. I know GPS isn't millimetre accurate, but that's ridiculous! ;-)

Has anyone else had any similar issues and know a fix for it?

Thanks,

dlmuller

Yes. It worked in Toowoomba when I tried it out first, but not out here in Gundy. The maps cover Goondiwindi - I've got directions for around town and stuff, but it wont locate me.

At times my iPhone tells me it's in Austria. Seems to have stopped lately.

It is very accurate though, I can see myself moving around my house.

When it shows you at Surfers Paradise it is a pulsing blue dot on the map or is it a circular cross-hair?

My GPS hasn't been working that crash hot for the past three days. Sometimes it's spot on (blue dot), other times it does the cross-hair over a large area about 30 km.

I'm starting to think it could be a problem with the phone figuring out which phone tower I am connected too. I'm with Telstra too btw.

It's the blue cross hairs covering 30km. In toowoomba though, it was the pulsing blue dot.

my gps hasn't been 100% spot on for the past three or so days either. The gps was originally 100% on the mark, but it hasn't been getting that recently.

OK, I think I have it sorted.

I had been trying use it on the wi-fi network at home rather than using the cellular phone network and only got the Blue cross-hairs. However, when I was out and about last night, tried again when away from wi-fi and it worked (got the pulsing blue dot). So I think it must have something to do with the fact that on wi-fi it can't locate itself with the A-GPS and needs cell towers to work?

Does this sound right and 'fit' with what others know about A-GPS and have experienced with their iPhones?

Have you been inside or outside when you've tried it in Goondiwindi?

I've tried both inside and outside. When it worked I was away from the wi-fi network and using 3G data from the phone network (Telstra) but when it didn't work it was connected to my home wi-fi network. That's the only difference I can identify. That's why I think it has something to do with whether the data needed is wi-fi or 3G streamed.
