Iphone Sealed... Locked? Or Unlocked?
Hi MacTalk team,
I have just purchased an Iphone 3g and as i purchased it out of town, it was picked up from a Telstra shop Sealed in box.
Now the people at the telstra shop left a message with the person who went to pick it up and that was that the phone would NOT work until i brought it back into the store and they loaded some sort of Telstra Software onto it....
Now to me this sounds like a "Telstra Crappy software" type thing, as i've purchase SE in the past that have had the bain of Telstra branding all over them..
Can someone shed some light on this?...
(P.S I have googled, and found little information, and since i am new to Iphones this seemed to be the place to ask)
Cheers
-Smith

I believe that you can activate it at-home with iTunes as long as your mobile account is activated, however I will await somebody with a little more experience in the field to answer.

Your lucky you got to do an unboxing at your house. I had Optus employees treating my iPhone like "just another phone".

The carrier, Telstra in your case, needs to activate/unbrick the phone, but don't need the actual phone. On their systems, they register the IMEI with Apple and the activation happens through iTunes, which can be at your place, or anywhere.
AFAIK.

I wish mine was sealed when I left the shop. The operator unbricked it for me in-store. He was quite careful with it though, which was good.

Cheers for all the replys guys, i'll go ahead and activate it myself at home and see what i come up with.
I presumed that the speal about having to put telstra stuff on there was just their propergander.
So should i assume that they've register the IMEI with Apple ?...

The only telstra content I can see on my iPhone is a Bookmark to Bigpond mobile in Safari.
There's no other Telstra Software installed.

There is no Telstra software ,only a bookmark to Bigpond mobile. Which is good for checking weather, news & your data use. Also you will find the pocket apps that are located on the sim. Don't know anyone who uses them now days. Guess its a carry over from the early GSM days.

You can activate at home, like everyone else has said. I have done this myself too.
When you purchase the iPhone, your IMEI gets recorded. Presumably it gets transferred upon activation to Apple servers as well.
This is also required when unlocking.
