I am guessing you mean you cannot send an email when on the road via 3G network.
It's due to the outgoing smtp server rejecting you, setup on your mac to use an gmail smtp outgoing server (and then authenticate to said smtp gmail server using your gmail account) then you will be able to send email from any network provider as long as you have authenticated to the smtp server.

OK.... LOL that sound simple Mmmmm
Ihave changed the smtp settings in my outgoing account on the phone. It worked fine when I was the house wireless network. Everything was sent. Now as you say I am back on the 3g internet and yes again it wont send only receive.
ps does this mean all email will be sent saying its a gmail account and not the home one (i.e tpg)
Can i not set it up so it is sent from the home email address? sorry for all the Qs, its all quite new to me.

Alternatively enable outgoing-mail authentication on your TPG server (if they support it), or use your Mobile provider's outgoing SMTP server.

I am telling you to use an smtp server that requires authentication, as then it will be enabled to relay from anyone who authenticates, thus getting around the issue of trying to use tpg smtp server from an ip address that they see as you not being a tpg customer.
As posted said above, if tpg smtp can be authenticated against, then do that. But I suspect it won't most ISP's do not provide an smtp server that does this.
Best and quickest method is to use gmails smtp server, which requires authentication. But don't change the incoming mail server and/or your email address used when sending email.
ie.
I can use my own domains pop mail server to collect email for bob@domain.com from host pop.domain.com.
But when I send my email, it will still say sent from bob@domain.com, but I want to use the smtp server smtp.gmail.com which I authenticate against using my gmail userid and password. This way I can be connected to 3G network and/or any wireless network I find and still send emails without issue.

Use smtp.three.com.au as your outgoing mail server with no authentication.

Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Your Email Account > Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) > Primary Server
What does it say there? Is it ON?
What "Other SMTP Servers" do you have?
Your ISP?
Your 3 SMTP?
If not, Add Server...
If you have multiple email accounts set up on the iPhone (look in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Your Email Accounts
Then set each Primary Server, corresponding to that email account.
For example,
If you have Gmail on the iPhone, use smtp.gmail.com as the Primary Server for Gmail.
If you have your ISP email on the iPhone, use your ISP's SMTP server.
If they are not listed, add them.
Also as purana said, authenticate! That means putting a username and password in, even if it says "optional".
Hope that helps, otherwise, configure it on the Mac side inside Mail.app and then re-sync your iPhone, so that the settings match the Mac.
Good luck,

Sometimes the iPhone 3G plays up with mysterious network and other problems. Try a reboot first up and see if that solves the problem. When I setup my push email, it didn't work for hours while I tried all kinds of settings. A reboot sorted it all out.

Hello.
I tried Huy's instructions, I tried to send a test email.
The progress completed bar went right across then it comes up with
Cannot send Mail.
The sender address was invalid.
(extra info, I am with Optus, and trying to use my gmail account with mail app)
I used the manual IMAP settings from google and not the easy click on google logo way..
I do not use mail on my mac, so i cannot change the settings there and re-sync..
I seem to be able to receive email still but still cannot send..
Should I be using the Optus smtp settings? So far I have primary set to gmail and secondary turned on which is the Optus. I also tried manually entering in settings for gmail to go below the Optus. But then it didn't really work at all, it didn't have my gmail folders etc.
Please help.
Solved: I just deleted the account and click on the usual gmail logo to set it up the easy way.
Is the automatic clicking on gmail logo in add account way IMAP?

Hi,
Firstly I am an absolute novice with the language you guys have used in this thread... but it was a fun read anyway.
I fixed my mail "not being sent" by being brave and having a crack! I have a netspace account.
1. Settings > Mail,Contacts > Calendars
2. yourname@netspace.net.au (the first one!)
3. Outgoing Mail Server
4. Primary Server (hit this) = mail@netspace.net.au
5. Turn it ON - mail@netspace.net.au - username (enter yours) - Password (enter yours) - Use SSL = OFF
6. Server Port = 25 (I didn't set that)
Have a go... it worked for me!
I hope this works for you as I know how frustrating this can be.
Tony
