[Merged] 3G iPhone Reception problems worldwide?

EDIT - SURVEY UP for those 3G iPhone users on Australian Carriers. Looking for any interesting patterns, and to see how widespred any issue might be. If you would like to take part hit up the link.
(4/8/08 - 100 survey replies received, this is the maximum I could collect. If you are experiencing issues, please report your findings at the end of this thread.)

Interesting threads on the Apple discussions and on Howard Forums.

Poor 3G reception seems to be a worldwide occurence.

It's a long but interesting read, and certainly matches my experience with the Optus 2100mhz network in South Coast NSW.

Symptoms seem to be -
- dropped calls
- "No Service"
- slow to change between 2/3G networks
- slow data transfer rates
- consistantly 1 bar of reception (in areas with coverage known to be better than this)

What's everyone else's experience? (I have a feeling people in Syd/Melb will report no problems - possibly because the coverage is so thick over these cities, towers close together to cope with density and volume/usage requirements?)

PLEASE, in your relply can you leave the following information -
- CARRIER (Telstra/Voda/Optus)
- Rough location
- Symptom(s)

I'm not having these problems at all.

I live in Brisbane and consistently have 3G coverage just about everywhere I go.

I'm also finding that it almost doesn't matter how many 3G bars are on the reception icon. If I can get 1, I can get a good connection and download speed.

Using the same Optus sim, sitting in the same spot in my house, i see a drastic difference in download speed using a Nokia 6110 Navigator (2100mhz 3g.)

iPhone = 440kb/s
Nokia = 780kb/s

People are reporting 1Mbps+ speeds on 3G iPhone so it's probably the providers here that are limiting the bandwidth of the iPhones

Two 16GB Blacks, both with Optus, both have call drop out issues. One phone is being replaced on Monday/Tuesday next week by Apple. If this fixes the problem, I'll go ahead and get the other replaced by Apple. I've ordered a network unlock so that I can try it with a different provider, but am not sure if this will fix the issue. Call drop outs happen all over Sydney, Ultimo, Lidcombe, Mt Druitt, Burwood & Darlinghurst.

I havn't heard of any complaints from Telstra users yet... maybe its a 850/2100mhz issue?

Ipswich with Optus.
Mostly have one bar, but reception seems to be ok.
Seeing one bar worries me but when browsing the web it doesn't seem to effect the speed. I think we only have 2x3g towers here and one on the way.
