Telstra Iphone 3g - Sale and Unlocking Price
Hello Everyone,
I recently bought a iphone like many others. Heres what happened at the store in melbourne. for those wont dont want to read, the gist is am trying to gather info from ppl who have bought iphones from Telstra to try and take this to Today/Tonight or someplace else to prove the T-Lies
Iphone Sale Day
===========
July 11 - I went to a local telstra shop in melbourne. I ask the sales guy
- I want to get the Iphone 3g on plan and then cancel the 30$ plan (or)
- I am thinking about getting it outright but I am thinking what the unlocking process is going to cost me since it wasnt mentioned anywhere by Telstra.
The sales guy told me that if i were to get it on plan and cancel i will end up paying a lot more . He advised me that i should get it outright and that the unlocking process is
Quote --- On a case-by-case basis telstra loyalty team will decide whether to unlock the phone for free or not --- Unquote
So I thought well i have got a few services from Telstra and I definitely have to stand a chance to get the unlock done for free and went on to buy the phone outright.
Unlocking call today
=============
I call the team
Quote - Its a blanket 150$ fee every customer has to pay
My questions are
a) was the 150$ charge decided before the iphone was released?
b) if yes then why wasnt it given to the customers?
c) if there was a plan of doing a 150$ blanket charge, why would the script used by the sales team at T-Life in melbourne had "on a case-by-case basis, loyalty team with decide what the charge is ?"
in relation to "c" , I am asking every iphone3g mobile holder who bought from telstra confirm that
they were told " Quote --- On a case-by-case basis telstra loyalty team will decide whether to unlock the phone for free or not --- Unquote
If a fair few ppl can confirm, I want to confront Telstra because they are trying to screw the customers ( US) for being loyal in the first place to go and get it from Telstra.
Cheers
Vee~!

I was told that it was a case by case basis of whether they would unlock it at all, and that if they did, it would be $150. Telstra are utterly ridiculous. The only reason I'm going to go with them is that my dad is on a business plan there, and I can switch him to an iPhone plan and take the iPhone myself. Brilliant... So long as I can get it unlocked.

Confusing; doesn't a desire to unlock an iPhone indicate disloyalty?

Interesting. I spoke to a Telstra rep on the phone yesterday, and she told me it was $80 to unlock the phone. I inquired if that was only after a set amount of time (like 6 months) and she said no, it was the charge anytime.
Also, for me, as I am not a heavy pjone user, it was best for me to buy outright, transfer my 'member plan' and just buy a data pack.
I hit them up for a free month data pack (to see what my average usage would be before purchasing) and she said no likely, but to ask when I buy the phone.
Seems to me, it depends on who you ask.

well consider the loyalty of you going and buying it from telstra for a start.
unlocking it then is assumed coz you are buying the phone outright. even if you were to consider it being unlocked from telstra as a disloyal thing, i have already shown my loyalty by paying them 850 bucks. so theres no question of disloyalty here . A phone sold outright is unlockable according to what they said when the phone was sold. as i said the sales personnel didnt say you were going to pay a blanket 150$ fee
my whole questions are around how they sold the phone and their idea to charge a 150$ unlock fee

Doesn't this show you you should got with Optus: They disclose everything, and have very reasonable pricing at that.

That doesn't indicate loyalty - that's a one-off purchase that anyone "off the street" could have made.
You even said yourself that you considered yourself loyal because "...i have got a few services from Telstra".

There should have been an addendum for you to sign when signing your contract, explaining that you have been told about data plans etc, aswell as the unlocking price of $150.
I had to sign this at t-life last Friday.

optus takes majority of their profits overseas since they are a singtel owned company.
i dont like that they take money made of us aussies overseas.
they never asked me to sign anything. just gave me the phone and charged my card.

I bought my phone outright from T. Wasn't told anything about unlocking and was given no information, just a receipt and that's it.

Mitty - were u told about
" on a case-by-case basis .... " ( read from my first post) ?
if yes i just want to call telstra and ask them wtf they are thinking . because today the person i spoke to at customer loyalty simply siad that the telstra person who sold the phone to you might not have had a clue of what to say.
i hate it when they blame those poor guys who worked a 15 hour shift to sell us the phones.

yeah Telstra sucks
hi all,
i was told by a salesman at tLife that the unlocking would take place "if they felt like it" and that it "would be assessed on a case by case basis". currently i'm using at as anything but a phone and it's great...however would love nothing more than to slam my 3 sim card into it. when i phoned the Telstra unlocking service they quoted me $150 which i refused to pay and hung up. i'm hoping someone in the next week will make an unlocking utility or else i'll have to pay stupid Telstra the stupid money

I was told nothing, just that the phone was locked. I signed no paperwork at all. So technicallyl I guess I could take the phone back saying I didn't want to pay the 150, and then just wait for an optus prepaid to be available, but now I have my phone I really don't want to give it up.
I do feel sorry for the staff there, and agree that Telstra Management and marketing are mostly to blame for all this lack of communication.
But if you weren't given all the terms and conditions of the device and then later on want to unlock, they should either do it for free, or give you a full refund on the phone. What other choice would they have?
