This is the same thing that hapens on the iPhone and iPod touch. No library website, as far as I remember.
[4] No Internet.
It is pointless for you to get an iPhone or iPod touch, if you wish to:
a) Use Mail.
b) Use the Internet.
c) Use the library website.
The ONLY thing you can do, even with the 2.0 software (from my tests) is connect and obtain an IP address. You are prompted for your UniKey login/password however you do not use the cache/proxy and yes, I have funds in my account and it isn't locked.
I was hoping it would work with the iPhone 3G and 2.0 firmware, but in my testing, it is as crippled (and similar to) not having the Cisco VPN software on a laptop. No Blackboard, No WebCT either.

Even using the proxy in Safari www-cache5.usyd.edu.au :8080 or http://www.usyd.edu.au/proxy.pac it wont work? Bummer

If there was a way, it would work. I've informed ICT Helpdesk already and have been given a case/incident number.
Funnily enough, they have an iPhone and iPod touch guide now, which follows the exact same steps I described on Page 1.

Intranet is fine (this includes web mail, Blackboard, etc), as you can see here (VPN enabled, WiFi on). Internet is not (error below).

Did a bit of googling, I wasnt aware Safari didnt have separate proxy settings. Anyway, I read a post on another site that said:
"For proxy on wifi, try settings -> wifi, press the little > next to the network name, scroll down, and there's an option for HTTP proxy"
Does this make any sense? I think it means the system settings, not the safari settings

Thanks for that. I had forgotten about my own local wireless settings (which is inside Settings > Wi-Fi > SSID > ">").
That still does not work though - manually or automatically. I have tried various combinations. No go.
Thanks for reminding me about those settings though, that is where the proxy settings are for the connection.
I'll let ICT sort it out - somehow I doubt they will... but I'll be damned if they do.

While it's not specifically related to the Uni portion of the topic, is anyone aware of a way of entering the WPA key in plaintext? My key is 64bit's and a PAIN to enter on the iPhone keyboard! Impossible to see any errors I make as clearly the string is obfuscated by dots. All the letters are uppercase and there's plenty of numbers thrown in too..
Otherwise i'll just convert the key to lowercase and be done with it..

You should still be able to see each character being entered, before it becomes a "dot".
For example, if your password was "vortex" then you would see something like this:
*****x
As you are hitting the last character.

I have wireless woes on my iPhone but I will admit this is probably mostly due to my ignorance on many technical matters. I go to Monash and took my iPhone there the other day, I got the notification about available wireless networks and it came up with about 3 or 4, with one of them being unlocked. I pressed connect and I get the wireless symbol at the top of the screen but whenever I go onto safari or try and use the internet in any other way, it goes back to 3G/GPRS (depending on what I have turned on). I didn't realise this was due to the iPhone not being allowed onto the monash network, so I'd realllllyy appreciate it if when you work out how to log on, you post some reasonably easy to follow instructions haha.
I can't even connect at home! I need to call our tech guy I think. Linksys comes up as the available network, locked, and when I type in the password that supposedly gives access (about 20 characters long of numbers and letters, very confusing), it just says unable to join network. I wish I knew more about these things...if anyone has any advice as to what I'm doing wrong, I'd very much appreciate it.
Sorry for being so clueless

To anyone trying to get their iPhone working on the monash network, it appears the IT staff have added a guide on the monash website. You'll need your Monash Authcate details to be able to view the page.
Sadly there's still the 1 MAC address restriction so it's not much use to me (not yet willing to give up my laptop connectivity) but for others it may help.

Notwithstanding your problems connecting, I can;t believe your Uni IT support is so helpful. ANU is the most cashed up Uni in Australia and I have never heard of the DOI IT people helping someone with their own/non-university owned computer, I mean academics are flat out getting them to turn up and fix a computer so a lecture can take place properly.

thanks for that. I'll have to give that a try later in the week. Though shame they didn't up the MAC limit. As the optus 3g coverage is pretty good on campus, except in some lecture theatres, I may just stick with having the macbook on the network.
