iPhone Email and Contacts Question

I did a search and read The Great Big, Constantly Updated, Australian iPhone FAQ v2.0 before posting the following.

I use Gmail as my email provider and as most of you know, it holds all of my messages/information on their servers, instead of downloading it. On the iPhone, once I set it up with my Gmail, do my messages download to the phone so I can view them when I'm connected to the internet?

Also, I have all of my contacts on my sim card in my current phone. I don't have my own computer so its our family one and we use outlook express but its my parents address book. How would I get them from my sim to the iPhone?

Thanks,
tom.

Emails (assuming IMAP Gmail here) are synchronised on the iPhone with the Gmail backend.
You can actually download and view them, even 'offline' (no Internet, no 3G, no EDGE).
At least, that's what I was able to do before on my iPhone.

To your second question, I think you should manually put them in. Sucks, but since you're not about to jailbreak and use Installer.app, you can't use SIMports or similar programs to read the SIM card and copy them over onto your iPhone. Maybe it'll be a legit App Store program later on, I doubt it.

The iPhone won't read the numbers off the SIM so you'll have to add them to the iPhone yourself. How many friends do you have?

All friends and family, about 50...

Ohwell, entering them manually will give me a chance to update the information and practise typing with the iPhone keyboard...

Make sure your Gmail on the iPhone is using IMAP (go to the gmail web interface and see IMAP under Settings to show you the server names etc). If you use Mail.app or another mail programme on your computer make sure that uses IMAP not POP. Then you should be able to see everything from every device.

There's an import numbers from SIM function...

Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendar -> Contacts -> Import SIM Contacts

I haven't done it as all mine were in my MacOS Address book and now Mobile Me! Thoroughly recommend Mobile Me by the way

Is that a feature in the iPhone?

The SIM thing?

Yup. I haven't tried it though as I didn't have any contacts on my SIM.

See Page 97 of the iPhone manual here: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/...User_Guide.pdf

Hope that helps!

Tom
