Setting up IMAP on both your Mac and your iPhone

Hello,

I am wanting to have all of my accounts set up on both my iPhone and my iMac. I kind of have things working but I am not sure if I am using best practice?

Any tips from readers?

Maybe we can create a guide for others as I had trouble finding a guide myself?

Thanks
Morgs

P.S. I am not using Gmail.

I have my .mac account on both MBP and iPhone. Works great.

I also have my Gmail IMAP on both, but Gmail has never played nice with Mail.app.

I dont see a problem with using either this way.

IMAP is designed to support multiple devices connecting to the same email account simultaneously by keeping everything stored on the mail server and just caching the messages on the local device to improve performance and retain offline mail support.

What that means in the real world is that if you've configured your iPhone to access the same IMAP accounts as your iMac, and you are using both at the same time, you should have no problems. Changes made to email messages on the iPhone are reflected on the iMac the next time Mail checks the server, and vice-versa.

The only problem I've encountered is when I am viewing a message on the iPhone and my MBP decides to apply a message rule and move that message to another folder, which will cause the iPhone to return unexpectedly to the message list when it realises the message has been moved on the server.

I am using .Mac, and it works great. Not a problem, but I just let apple set it up it's own way.

On may iMac I am trying to understand the IMAP Path Prefix option and there also used to be an option called something like "Automatically Synchronies account..." or something like that. Seems to be missing in my mail.app now though.

On the iPhone do I use SSL (same question for iMac too)?

Thanks

the iphone should detect the same accounts on your mac, and sync them with the same settings.. too easy!

and yeah, the iphone only syncs the last 50 messages from each account, so it never gets too full.

Even on my mac though I am not certain that I am set up properly.
