Hellstra + Locate me = Phail?

Hey guys.

A mate has a 1.1.4 jailbroken and unlocked

Basically locateme in google maps can't locate him whether he is at work or home, and he lives near the CBD of Brisbane

Also, for some reason after removing APN etc edge still works, is this something else that telstra are at fault with? if I remove mine it doesn't work any more, but i'm on optus.

The Location stuff relies entirely on the fact that the cell towers in your area have already been mapped by the third party who's doing it for Google and Apple...I doubt that Brisbane is included regardless of what carrier you're on.

EDGE retains the last working one if it's blank. Change it to gibberish or "Disabled".

I should have said "I think EDGE retains" etc. I've seen it claimed by people that they blanked out their APN and they still managed to use data.

edit: yep - here.

I don't *think* anywhere outside of the USA has been cell mapped by Google yet. At least not intensively.

I was under the impression, and my "locateme" has certainly got a lot more accurate since I added my own, that it was Skyhook that the non-usa areas use for this function.

Add the Mac address and location of the WiFi routers you see to their network and see how it goes. I've got a mini project going on at the moment where I note a router and where I've picked it up and feed it back to them. I just hope that it's not illegal to do

True,

But like I said it works here in a small country town, and anywhere in the city

Not heaps accurate, gives you the general idea, but in brisbane he gets an error saying it has nfi where he is.

maybe he should give that locate me app a try

I have both Navizon and LocateMe apps on my iphone, neither of them get anywhere near where I am, one of them is so erratic it's around 20k's from where I am one day and 5k's the next. The LocateMe app finds 6 cell towers around me but can only read 3 of them on the database it queries.

I'm on Optus and a couple of weeks ago, locateme found me on the corner of Elisabeth and Albert streets within about a 10m radius. The phone *must* have a working data connection of either GPRS/EDGE or Wifi for this to work of course.

1.1.4 with Google Maps locate me feature works very well in NZ -- well at least in Auckland...always within several hundred metres of my location.
