Can I download iPhone firmware without an iPhone?

Hi All,

My iPhone is arriving on Tuesday. I can't wait! But I have some questions about
restoring the iPhone.

My iPhone is coming locked with 1.1.3 and I intend to upgrade to 1.1.4 before I jailbreak etc with ziphone 2.5.

But I am worried about the SDK release tomorrow and possibility of newer firmware (1.1.5?) that isn't hackable yet.

Now I could always just stick with 1.1.3 and wait for the newer firmware to be hacked. But what if my iPhone stuffs up in the meantime and I need to restore it? Since I have never downloaded an iPhone update through iTunes. What will it restore to? 1.1.3 or newer possibly unhackable firmware?

Can I download tonight the 1.1.4 firmware somehow as insurance incase an unhackable firmware is released tomorrow? So in event of needing to restore iPhone I can use that firmware rather than whatever the current firmware is?

Hope this all makes sense. I am probably being paranoid and overly cautious but I don't want any problems with my iPhone!

You most certainly can.

In addition to that list, the 1.1.4 firmware direct download link is: http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite....2_Restore.ipsw

Cool! Thanks for the links.

I've downloaded the ipsw file. So when I restore the iPhone. Do I have to press any special buttons to get it restore from the downloaded firmware rather than get it's own. Or do I copy to a special folder so that iTunes can find it?

I now only have to wait till Tuesday for my iPhone! The agony!

If you ever need to restore, in iTunes just hold down the Option (alt) key and click Restore.

Then you'll be able to browse to where you downloaded the firmware :-)
