iPhone optus edge not working after upgrading to 1.1.4

Hey,

I used to have version 1.1.1 and I was able to use edge by typing in 'internet' into the apn field in settings. I am with optus. After I upgraded to 1.1.3, i did the same thing but noticed that now i cant use edge. On the screen next to the amount of reception you have it used to have a little E inside a box, now its just a blank box. Yesterday I updated to 1.1.4 and I still have no edge. I have only entered 'internet' into the apn fields, leaving username and passsword blank.... it used to work on 1.1.1?

Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

The blank box means GPRS. EDGE is not available on Optus (it is an upgraded version of GPRS.)

Nope, you never had edge. iPhone 1.1.1 was not made to figure out if your on edge or gprs.

You thought you had edge, the iphone thought you had edge, but you infact had gprs.

Optus never had edge. They only have and always have only had gprs.

GPRS is just a slower version of EDGE.

If you had no internet connection through your carrier that little box wouldnt even display.

Seriously, put your APN in as Internet, and then try to browse the web. It will work.

Wow, when your tired you tend to repeat things. Please forgive

Telstra is the only company offering EDGE in Australia

Firmware 1.1.2 came the introduction of E or box as in the UK. O2 has EDGE in the cities and rural areas GPRS.

So when the iPhone is connected to GPRS you have a box and EDGE you have an E

iPhone works fine on GPRS

You wouldnt know if the iPhone uses more batter power using GPRS vs EDGE or vice versa?

Wifi is what you would want to use at home, but when you are not at home you can still use your iPhone to connect to the internet through Optus.

I dont think you understand the whole EDGE thing tho. You see, before, when you thought you had EDGE, you actually didnt. What you had was GPRS, which is just an older version of EDGE hence slightly slower. The iPhone didnt know how to distinguish between EDGE and GPRS, and always showed the E symbol.

Now that you have the updated software that can determine between EDGE and GPRS when it shows the blue box with no E inside it you do infact have an internet connection through GPRS, which means you can get internet on your iPhone, just like you did before, it is just that the icon that shows your connection is different.

Basically, think of it as this: If you have that blue box there you can get an internet connection and all you have to do is put in your APN settings, which I believe is simply 'Internet'.

I hope this makes it clearer, if it doesnt let me know and I'll try explaining it better...

I have the same problem. On 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 Optus GPRS worked fine with "internet" entered as the APN. Now on 1.1.4 Optus GPRS data does not work. Any suggestions?
