Google MAPS for a newbie?
So I'm 3 days old with my unlocked iphone and still getting use to the phone.
Does Google maps work in Australia? I can't even seem to get it to find me when on wifi?

You should be able to use maps with wifi (i can on my ipod touch with maps), however the performance may be sluggish if using the mobile network.
I can't answer your questions about the find me feature, however.

The find me feature works fine on an iphone if you have FW 1.1.3 installed, and are within the range of at least one mobile phone tower. It gets increasingly more accurate the more phone towers are detected. Where I am (Melb CBD) it is spot on.
If you have FW 1.1.2 or lower you can get the find me function to work by installing LocateMe from the installer and then running it once. After you have run it once, the find me feature on Google Maps should work.

Mobile network loads the Hybird view rather quickly (I can easily use maps in brisbane, etc without issue on the fly over vodafones network.)
Only takes 5-10 seconds to load a "screen"

Ya, pretty obvious the itouch/iphone were made with infinite/constant net avail either via wifi or edge - sadly for touch users.

The locate me on WiFi works by looking up all MAC addresses of routers in range of your iPhone/iPod Touch and submitting a request to Skyhook Wireless to see if a GPS location has been mapped to that router. MAC addresses are like unique signatures on each networking device. Typically in America "Locate Me" works (for the most part) pretty good because Skyhook drives around and indexes the location of wireless routers, but that doesn't happen much in Australia... however, we have the option to contribute ourselves, and as long as one does not abuse this I recommend users get behind this! I've discussed the solution on another thread http://forums.mactalk.com.au/showthr...669#post451669. I've been indexing a few houses in my neighborhood, at workplaces and mate's places. Means when I want to use my iPod Touch around the place, it works a lot better

Go to Settings > General > About > Modem Firmware
What is your Modem Firmware?
If it is 04.03.13_G then you should be able to use the Find Me in Maps with no issues.
If it is 04.02.13_G then you will not be able to use the Find Me in Maps with out using the Locate Me app.
I hope that helps.

I have a problem with the 'Give me directions'.
When it looks up from the addresses in my contact's it say's 'driving directions can't be given'. I've worked out that it's because it's trying to locate the address in the United States. I've check in my contacts and the addressing in their definately say Australia.
Can anyone help? I don't know how to stop my maps defaulting to the US.
