Any QUT Students able to access wifi on iphones/itouchs?
They don't have the normal logon method I used at UQ, instead, I'm meant to create a VPN way of logging in, yet it does not seem to work.
The info they provide is
Check you are within a wireless coverage area. Your device should be able to detect the QUT Wireless Network (SSID) named 'QUT-Wireless'
If you are running Windows 2000 operating system, download and install the Cisco VPN Client ( http://www.its.qut.edu.au/offcampusaccess/downloads.jsp)
Login with your QUT-Access username and password .
For PDAs and other devices that do not support the software
Create VPN connection (IPSec/L2TP) connection to 10.0.0.2
Use pre-shared key of "qutaccess"
Login with your QUT-Access username and password.
Once connected to QUT-Wireless, you will need to enter your QUT-Access username and password to authenticate.
Done & Done, yet i tried to access it today, and VPN "Couldn't connect to server" While at QUT(Brisbane campus).
Anyone else here go there and or done anything similar?
No Wi-Fi is horrible, how can i surf youtube without it :/ (I'll just take my laptop from now on!)

If it's anything like USYD (and it sounds like it, given you need Cisco VPN Client) then the best you can do is probably intranet only access (for me, this just means uni mail).
At USYD, there is no PDA/mobile support for wireless and no client available. There is also no support for 64-bit Vista, only 32-bit XP, Vista, Mac OS X and Linux.
EDIT
Whoops just saw that "For PDAs and other devices that do not support the software" bit. Maybe QUT is different and supports PDAs.

I got a *little* bit further by entering my student number (nXXXXX) in the client id field of the Wifi settings on my iphone, it asked me for my password, then connected. But then I couldn't browse anything because I never got an IP address.
I'm there tomorrow so I'll give it another bash and let you know how I go.

Spoke to the IT guys & was told they are aware, and that they get this question once every single day, heh.
He said the uni is adding these to the network in about 4-5 months they need to redo some things to let them work.

Hi,
To use the QUT wireless network you need to have WPA2 and use the QUT ssid or the Cisco VPN client. Both of these options are now available if you upgrade to the latest firmware for your iphone.
Peter.

Interesting, might attempt this or go ask the help desk if they've worked it out then.

Isn't that Cisco VPN client stuff in the iPhone 2.0 firmware? Which isn't available until June?

(I work for a different Brisbane Uni)
Looks like the best bet is waiting for version 2.0. I've tested this on an *cough*iPhone*cough* and the Cisco VPN client works great, but the WPA Enterprise still has some short comings (like not many enabled auth methods) and have sent feedback up through the chain, specifically about supporting the auth methods required by eduroam.
I've tried configuring PPTP and L2TP on a Cisco VPN concentrator and lets just say, it is ugly at best, so I doubt too many will go down this path.
