installing applications

i installed my 1st application, from the inbuilt system. Just some wallpaper pictures but it worked and i was pretty chuffed.
hey i can do this stuff.
But the next thing i wanted to do was add the dock so i can take screen shots.
the installer asks me to install BSD subsystem trying this fails. May there be a reason for it?
I have tried several times.

16 gig 1.1.3
Installer 3.0
everytime i try to download apkg it fails. I have full wifi signal, done reboot of the phone of course.

Krafty, you *really* need to read more in this forum about things that you need to have installed, and what works and doesnt.

BSD subsytem and community sources at a minimum. You'll also need to add a few sources after that if you want to get at a lot of different software, unfortunately some of the sources are dead... but, you take the good with the bad.

Assuming you have community sources installed, you probably also have a source called Shai's apps. Theres a lot of good stuff in there including a big listing of other sources. do NOT install it, because many of them are dead, and if you uninstall that particular listing, it also takes out all the sources as well as shais apps itself. Instead, if you want to use the scattergun approach, add to your installer source list ...

http://ihacks.us/index.xml

and then install the list of sources from there. there are some dead ones anyway, but at least he leaves out most of the foreign langauge stuff unless theres something useful for those of us using english phones. To put the address into your sources, you select the sources button on screen, select edit at top right, then add at top left. be patient, its a slow process.

thanks kyte, it is a difficult process i agree.
i don't need extra applications, but i do want to be able to change things around like themes etc. If a great application comes out for the iphone, i want to have an idea how to install it. skype & GPS are two i'd like to see come out.
Everything on the 1.1.3 is good OTB, AUS formatting etc. I'm just happy to have such a masterpiece of technology so early in the game.
Ther isn't really a lot of information on this forum about how to install these types of things. There is more information about how to do things if you have an older iphone that needs upgrading downgrading unbricking etc.

thanks for the tips.

Install the sources, anyway, Krafty, as thats where those apps will turn up. Google maps in 1.1.3 has a fake gps thing, it can locate you and tell you how to get to where you want to go. Its not like a dedicated GPS and does require net access, but better than nothing.
