when is it wifi and when is it gprs??
Hi, im an iphone noob. I just bought an otb 1.1.2 jailbroken with stealth sim iphone ...and i have no idea what I"m doing...

I've setup gmail on my iphone using imap. I can get my gmail now when im connected to my wireless network. no problems there.

I"d like to also be able to get my gmail / pop mail via grps / data / edge. I have an optus phone account - i have no idea if it's got a data component. Question - assuming i upgrade my account to include data (and staying with optus), how does my iphone know when to use wi-fi to get my gmail and when does it use gprs / data ?? I guess im trying to aviod using gprs when I have a wi-fi network close by.

I believe (if you're running EDGE) you'll see an E when you're not connected to a Wireless Network on the top left corner of screen... the idea is that it uses the faster wireless when you're in range, and drops off to Edge when you're roaming.

If you turn on wireless, it should take precedence over GPRS.

As mentioned, the wireless is the "signal" icon (3 or 4 bars to indicate signal strength) and the "E" for GPRS (technically it means EDGE because there's a blank square and the "E" as well on 1.1.2).

Blank square means GPRS.

"E" means EDGE in use.

Bars = wireless. Otherwise it's falling back on GPRS all the time (blank square).

Read as much as you can. There are a couple of posts that spring to mind about iPhone preferences, data usage and carrier billing. I'm not sure that any of this might apply to you but it's worth a read (these pertain to Vodaphone and data billing).
