A mate has picked up an iPhone in the USA for me and provided the serial number: 86750Txxxxx (blanked the last 5 digits myself) Does week 50 sound right, and what's the chances it'll be 1.1.2? He says the box images have 1.1.2 firmware pictured..

Indeed it is mate. It's the original plastic cover that comes with the Iphone. I have yet to remove it. I didn't think that would affect the volume though..

I'm surprised that people don't remove these covers immediately.

Well, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that's it. I know if my speaker is even slightly covered with my hand or whatever, the volume drops drastically.
If you're determined to leave the plastic on then I'd say cut around the speaker, and if that doesn't do it then there's an app in Installer someplace that increases the speaker volume.
edit: it's AudioAmp, under Tweaks 1.1.2.

i know we've been here before but i am still not clear...
A3 Australia says you can:
"Activate/Jailbreak and 'unlock' this iPhone to do everything an AT&T USA iPhone is capable of (except for visual voicemail) and more...." using TurboSIM and the like.
My phone is serial number 8875IXXXXXX, which i am assuming is the latest version which everyone else says is unlockable - can someone please clarify the version and the current activation status? i dont want to start the process and totally stuff it up.
thanks heaps

It is a Week 51 iPhone, made in 2007. (The "751" explains it. 7 for 2007 and 51 for Week 51).
It should have firmware 1.1.2 on it, out of the box, which is unlockable using the TurboSIM solution.
Good luck,

thanks huy
i have spent mega hours fully reading threads and searching for options (like everyone else). realised i first needed to jailbreak before going with your suggestion of the turboSIM option to unlock.
today got the courage to try the jailbreak, but didnt get far....phone is stuck in restore mode and wants me to upgrade to 1.1.3, (didnt give me the option of going back) which from everything i have read is not a good idea. cant go forward and cant go backward.
any ideas for a loser learner?

I think you need to downgrade your firmware from whatever it is, to 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 before you can jailbreak.
I'm not 100% because I don't use the Turbo/StealthSIM solution.

Hey, a mate has his iPhone still on 1.0.1. He's planning to use this method to get from 1.0.2 to 1.1.2, but the question is whether he needs to do that. Can he just use the Virginize app on 1.0.1?

in particlar I got stuck with an itunes error saying itunes didnt recognise the iphone at the end of approx 30mins ie here... "6.3 Wait the half hour or whatever it takes to complete the download and installation"
....to be honest i cant remember what or how I got to be where I am now, but after restarting the computer (mac) and itunes eventually doing something, anything with the iphone, I get this message in itunes:
"the sim card in this iphone does not appear to be supported" etc etc
there is no option to restore. arghhh!!!
....I also tried to do do step 7
but it cannot connect to the device.
--------------
why o why didnt i just leave it be at 1.0.2. I had been using it for almost 3 months. arghhh. please help!!!
edit:
Scott came to the rescue, BRILLIANT
I am now on 1.1.2 and even using GPRS for web browsing on vodafone. the problem for me is that itunes 7.5 did not do as was expected in the last part of step 6 of the manual. not sure why, but it did not recognise the iphone after that. yet it did the upgrade to 1.1.2. ...scotts FIX was to take me back to 1.1.1, and try again. but not letting itunes get in the way overly. it worked.

1.1.1. You should be able to jailbreak it, even if you've accidentally upgraded the firmware - check out http://iphone.unlock.no for some instructions on how to do so.

oh. i bought it unlocked already - the seller said it was 1.1.2 otb. I am using it with a stealth sim and it's okay. the problem is that won't receive calls when in sleep mode. there's a patch which says i need to rename a file in the iphone library system - but I have no idea how to do that.
