Broken iPhone screen - can any fix it if I pay them?

Hi all,

Dropped the iPhone and despite it being in a case, the screen cracked.

Now I see there are some overseas websites that will fix it up for around $250 ut time is the issue.

I see that there are some DIY repair threads where the glass screen isn't replaced but a film cover put over.

I was wondering if anyone here has the time to replace the screen etc and that I pay them for it. If you need I also have an Ipod Touch, so I do not know if the screen from that could be used.

Feel free to post or PM.

Chris

NB I will out of caution send the phone, but would lean towards forum members that are known as the prefered choice.

I'm pretty sure its not the same screen in the touch vs the iPhone but then again I am known to be wrong on a lot of issues

There was a guy in melbourne selling screens for $60 on ebay a few weeks back. I saw them when looking at iPhone stuff on ebay at the time

No idea if he is still advertising. But try your luck on an ebay search perhaps?

I dropped my iPhone onto a concrete footpath, but I was one of the lucky ones. (Merely scratched, in about four places, including the camera lens.) I feel your pain, chrissara.

Some lucky early buyers in the States had their smashed screens replaced under AppleCare, but you would need to reinstate the software, sign up for an AT&T contract, and send the phone back to the US to even try that on for size.

(Meanwhile, I'll keep an eye out for replacement screens...)

Wow, i have seen some examples of Iphones being pegged at concrete foot paths and not breaking, so I would say you must have been really unlucky.

I bought my brand new iPhone 16GB on Wed. Less than 48 hours later I now have a cracked spider web looking screen. As I pulled it out of my pocked it slipped out of my hand and hit the concrete on its left front edge. I just ordered a $100 protective case for it that morning too! Talk about a bitch.

The phone still works, but its a bit hard (and quite annoying) to see read some of the text and keyboard at times. I'm going to head into my local Apple store tomorrow and hope I can sweet talk them into fixing it for me for free. I have a feeling though I'll be walking away $299 poorer and pretty pissed off. I'd be willing to pay $50 to replace the glass, but $299 is just plain crazy.

Anyone buying an iPhone I HIGHLY recommend buying a protective case straight away to avoid yourself from forking out a lot of money to get it fixed.

Hi Chrissara,

Did you end up sending your cracked iPhone to minidigital?

I manage to drop mine and crack the screen, was wondering if minidigital were any good for repairs?

Joel from Next Byte in Ivanhoe had his screen replaced by these guys in the States.
Rapid Repair: iPod Repair, iPhone Repair, Batteries, LCD Screens and more!
He said that it is important that the repairer has the correct suction equipment to hold the back evenly when they take it off or you will always be able to tell that it has been removed. He said that when he got his iphone back it was as good as new.

I have sent mine there for a different screen problem to be fixed and am awaiting its arrival and diagnosis.
If they can't fix it or the price of repair is not right for you they will offer me a price for my phone for parts.

Still, I would be interested to hear how the crowd in Perth went for Chrissara

i bought the glass on Ebay for $30 - about half way through replacing.

its not hard, just time consuming and delicate.

i have 2 x bullseye and cracks everywhere. Using 2 precision screw drivers to lever the glass shards off the screen and break the glue bond. i have so far got about 25% of the glass off with no problems. will finish it over the weekend. lots of glass shards and glass dust everywhere though!

Steve
all done, new glass fitted, phone is looking fantastic again.

BUT....

I was hasty... above the round button, you need to be VERY careful where the LCD finishes... there is a groove. I chipped the LCD, this caused the touchscreen to no longer work. So my phone now looks great - with no touchscreen at the bottom, so I can't unlock it, but i can use the ipod conrols. if i run my finger on the unlock for about 2-3 mins it eventually unlocks but the bottom half of the screen has very dodgy touchscreen capabilities. $270 for New LCD and glass from a guy in Sydney.

If telstra don't sel lthe 3G in the next 2 weeks i'll just get this repaired.

This is second hand news, but I spoke with led-zep today (who bought my iPhone) and he showed me his screen that was cracked.

He said that Voitech can replace the broken screen/glass for around $300 which seems to be the normal rate looking at the above post/s.

it is possible to fix yourself with some luck

I've attempted to fix the broken screen on my iphone with limited success, however, the lessons learned should help others attempting to do a DIY repair.

Good luck!

Some people have bagged me for having a skin on my phone which obviously takes away from it's sexiness, but I know that I'm gonna drop it somewhere, somehow, eventually, and when I do I want it protected so that hopefully it will survive and save me some dosh.

I had my gen 1 screen replaced by the Mobile Phone Clinic in Melb for $260 while you wait, about an hour.

Okay, this is my recommendation.

If you're with Optus, sign up for SafeGuard Essential immediately (the 8.13 one). With Optus insurance, all you have to do is be able to make a call on the phone (to prove that it hasn't already been lost, stolen or destroyed). Within the first 3 months, you have to pay an extra $65 to get it repaired or replaced. There is also a charge of $50 to get it repaired, or a charge of $100 to get it replaced. This means that it will cost you $165 to get a replacement.

Still a lot better than buying a new phone. Correct me if I'm wrong on any of these points. Here is the site with all the details:

Optus Phone Insurance

Here are the relevant points from the Terms and Conditions:

1. Your completed form does not constitute a covernote. Your SafeGuard insurance policy is issued on the date your application form is received. However, your insurance protection only commences when you have made your first successful "outbound" call with the insured phone on the Optus Mobile Network.

EXCESSES
SafeGuard Essential and Business
Sections 1 & 4
General Excess
You must pay the following first amounts of all claims under Sections 1 and 4 in respect of Insured Equipment arising out of any one event:-
• $50 for all claims where the Insured Equipment is repaired.
• $100 for the first claim arising from any event occurring in any twelve month period where the Insured Equipment requires replacement,
• $175 for the second or any subsequent claim arising from any event occurring in the same twelve month period where the Insured equipment requires replacement.
• The General Excess for replacement is reduced to the following amounts when at the time of loss the SafeGuard Insurance Plan applicable has been in force for the following continuous periods and no previous claims have been lodged in that period:
• $75 for more than 12 months • $nil for more than 24 months,
New Insurance Excess
You must pay the following additional amount when at the time of loss the SafeGuard Business or SafeGuard Essential Plan has been in force for the following continuous periods only:
• $65 less than 3 months.
SafeGuard Basic
You must pay the first $50 of all claims under Section 1 in respect of Insured Equipment arising out of any one event.
