What brand of GPS are you trying to pair with? I paired mine with a TomTom GO 710 by initiating the pairing from the TomTom, at which point it told me what pairing code to enter on the iPhone.

I wish I had bought a TomTom now, I didnt find out until after the event that theres Mac software for it. Instead, I have C520 MIO.

In any case, I also poked around some other forums and it seems that 0000 works in most cases and it just did for me as well, thank goodness, I thought I was going to have to sell the MIO which I actually rather like.

Thanks for the input, though, Jamesatfish

I got mine working with a Garmin Nuvi 660. Works well, with no problems.

I just got the c520 for christmas and am having a hard time pairing it with my iPhone. Did you have to do anything special?

In the end, no. Just make sure you have the phone discoverable, and when the Mio finds it (which it will) make sure that it picks up the name of the phone rather than an address. If it finds the name, you're set. (ie keep trying the pairing until that happens, took 2-3 times for me)
