Thanks for the thread macaholic but I should tell you USYD is crippled and quite pointless. I tried this two months ago when I got my 3G iPhone with 2.0 firmware and told them about it (and they didn't do anything. Of course).
What is their solution? Turn WiFi OFF... fantastic.
Quote:
Please note that the iPhone 3G does not support the combination of VPN and http proxies that are required to access many internal and all external sites via the USYD Wireless network. ICT are working to upgrade the Wireless network and are expecting this issue to be resolved before the end of Semester 2 2008, however until this time most functionality other than Exchange account synchronisation cannot be achieved through the wifi connection while on campus. Users experiencing an inability to access external websites while on campus may need to disable the wireless connection while on campus, which can be done by completing the following:
Settings -> Wi-Fi -> slide Wi-Fi from ON -> Off.

i'm at ballarat, haven't tried the iphone at uni (i'm barely there) -- i would assume that if you want to get in you'd just sign onto the wifi just like with a laptop. they have this wack online tracking/charging system running and you log onto that. its strange but i'll try it on thursday and get back with results.

iPhone works great on the Griffith Uni wireless. Pretty easy to set up too. However, if you're a student and not staff, when getting to the part that says: Enter credentials for the eduroam wireless network. Type in your Portal username, including the 's', followed by @griffith.edu.au, make sure you put in student.griffith.edu.au after the @ symbol. It won't work otherwise.

Just to clarify the workings of eduroam, is that it is not meant to work on your home institutions network. eduroam, is a federation where participating Universities (which is most of the Australian ones) set aside a bit of address space and create a new wireless SSID for which authentication is handled by the home institution.
This way, having an @griffith.edu.au account will allow you to take your laptop over to another University campus and connect to the eduroam wireless network there.
Mind you, the jury is still out on whether or not @student accounts should be allowed to authenticate to eduroam, but for the moment they are.

It was also on SMH. This happens at USYD as well.

The ANU wireless network has been shaped, as 25 users accounted for 68% of usage...
