del.icio.us, the iPhone and bookmarklets.

I often use Mobile Safari and get half way through reading something and want to check it out on my real computer. It usually happens that I'm at a url with countless numbers and slashes that would make it really hard to retype. It usually isn't worth it.

Sure I could bookmark it, plug my phone in, sync then go to the site. But it's just too much effort. Also, I don't use Safari as my main browser and I use del.icio.us for all my bookmarks.

Enter bookmarklets, those little bits of javascript magic. Go to this del.icio.us help page. Drag the Post to del.icio.us button to your bookmark bar then sync your iPhone. After that to bookmark to del.icio.us you just have to go to the site you want to bookmark and press the bookmarks button at the bottom of the screen.

Then find your Post to del.icio.us bookmarklet and press it.

Then enter in your tags and click save.

I'm going to make a tag called later for things that I don't want to keep but just want to read later. Then the bookmarks can be deleted.

This also seems to work with the Share on Tumblr bookmarklet so I imagine it will work with a lot of others.

I've been trying to work out a way to auto-complete the tags field with at least one tag. If anyone knows how I'd love to know.

Ahh, that could have been more clear. Bookmarklets are massively long bits of javascript like this:

HTML Code:
javascript:location.href='http://del.icio.us/post?v=4;url='+encodeURIComponent(location.href)+';title='+encodeURIComponent(document.title.replace(/^\s*|\s*$/g,''))
But the iPhone syncs your bookmarks with Safari (Mac version not iPhone). So, make a bookmark of the above javascript on your computer then sync your phone so you have that bookmark on your phone.

Flash as in Adobe Flash? It works fine for me and I can't see any Flash in use.

Excellent tip,
Also another helpful thing I found was adding long stories to Instapaper (free/$12.99) to read later.. it will actually save the page to the app, can read it on the train in the tunnel because it dosent need a connection. Plus it removes the annoying habit of Mobile Safari crashing..

Man talk about pulling an old thread outta the closet!

Anyway, a tip I wanna add is to use Google Reader to bookmark links to pages you want to read later. It's simple, just tap Share at the bottom, then later on look at your Shared feed on your mac for later reading

too bad i tried typing the delicious bookmark javascript manually into mobile safari, got right up to the end & realised that there is no "\" available FAIL!
I guess I'll just have to fire up safari on windows *shudder*, it's worse than firefox.

Great tip. I use the exact same method but with a different service: readbag.com

It also has a bookmarklet which I dragged to the bookmarks bar in Safari (also not my main browser) and then synced to the iPhone. Then, I can bookmark web pages for later the exact same way as the del.icio.us method; open up bookmarks on the iPhone, click on the readbag bookmark, it'll pop open a new window and save my link for later, then close the window automatically.

I also use del.icio.us for my bookmarks, but generally just the ones I really do want to keep. The beauty of using readbag is that you don't have to enter any tags (though you can if you want) because it's just a list of stuff you want to read later.

Edit: Should probably add that Readbag has an iPhone version and a nice home screen icon to match.
