if you're getting timed out, install bossprefs from cydia and ensure SSH is enabled using bossprefs.

you with optus Telstra or vodafone?
At the moment I've got the fix rolled in with my logo pack for optus but that will change tomorrow. I've got an sshd toggling app I'll be adding tomorrow.

OK, I managed to SSH into the phone and got the carrier.plist file.
I tried renaming the downloaded XML convert to carrier.plist from XML.plist.html (i think from memory) but the HTML bit kept appearing.
So I downloaded smultron and opened it.
Now when I added the two lines, they were directly under the line on top, that is, they were not indented.
I saved it as carrier.plist and then uploaded and rebooted (held hown the power button past the turn off screen).
Did not get the Cellular Data menu.
Popped out the vodafone sim with no data plan attached and popped in my Optus sim with data plan. Rebooted, no menu.
Any ideas?
Would the lack of indenting in the XML file been the cause?
How do I insert the indent, a tab? 5 spaces?
Any ideas appreciated
Cheers
Len

Keep the same structure.
If you need to indent, then use a tab indent.

actually, i accidentally had a space in one of the lines.
So that is the 16GB one done.
On to the 8GB one now. Same issued with SFTP. Had to upgrade SSH installed during upgrade. Then I was in no probs.
Only thing is the carrier.plist file, once converted to XML is nothing like the last one.
Its in/var/mobile/Library/Carrier Bundle.bundle. That is I expand the bundle then download the plist file from within it.
The text is no longer structured. Was it in XML to begin with?
Can anyone figure out whats going on from reading the converted plist file:

You need to convert it back again using bin2xml if you've just pulled it off the iPhone.

sorry Huy what do you mean, I need to convert the converted XML file back to binary?
I didnt pull what I posted off the iphone, i pulled it off and converted it first.
OK, so I will trash what I have done to date and start again to be sure:
This is what I pulled off the iphone (first 20 lines)
OK I CANT MAKE THIS LOOK LIKE THE STRUCURED FILE THAT IT IS

THEN I convert it using the website which turns it into this:

That website does two things.
It can convert forwards and convert backwards depending on what you want to do. Take files off the iPhone and edit? That is going forwards, converting it to a human readable and editable format, such as XML.
bin2xml and xml2bin.
If you want to edit it, go forwards.
You shouldn't need to go backwards at all as the iPhone can handle XML and be able to convert it by itself, back to binary.
If you pull it off the iPhone, no matter what, it is in binary. That is why you need to convert it to XML using bin2xml. Binary, to XML. That makes it readable and editable.
The point is, the junk above seems to look like the binary version opened in a text editor rather than 'clean' XML using bin2xml.
If I am wrong, my apologies. Wait for Linux to clear it up if my post is confusing or in any way wrong, but I have edited plists many times on the 1st gen and have required conversion too - so I have experience there. I don't see how the 3G would be any different and I'm not about to jailbreak my iPhone 3G just to find out and help you.

Huy, very odd.
Very Very odd.
Im doing exactly the same steps as before, but it seems that I am pulling off structured XML from the phone and the conversion step makes it look like the above.
But I just tried to not do the conversion step at all, and edited the plist file directly and uploaded it and that did not work. Phone works, just no APN menu.

to put it another way, it looks like I am starting out with what I ended up with on the 16GB phone, and ending up with god knows what.
Ill try again, take 3, different editor.

If you are already in a structured XML format, why do you need to convert it at all?
You do not need to follow the exact same steps if it's already been done before... otherwise you'll just reverse the process and go from bin2xml originally then xml2bin which is the mess you see. (Can you see how bin2xml and xml2bin is exactly the same as bin2bin?). The conversion process is required because we humans cannot understand binary/executables.
I have no other answers for you and can only wish you luck from here.
