How to create your own icons for Home Screen webclips

First you need to create an icon or find an image. Size it to 60 x 60. Save it as a .PNG. You must then have access to save that file to the web and know the URL to get to that image.

Go to this site: Add A Custom iPhone Home Screen Icon

Quote:
How to do I put the bookmarklet on my iPhone?

1. Drag the Green Bookmarklet icon above (click here for icon) to your desktop browsers bookmark bar (must be safari).
2. Sync your MAC / PC and iPhone with iTunes. Make sure you sync your bookmarks! (you have to check the option in iTunes - it's in the INFO tab when your iPhone is connected, scroll and check the box that says Sync Safari bookmarks)

Add Your Custom iPhone Home Screen Icon

1. On your iPhone, go to a page in Safari that you'd like a custom iPhone home screen icon for.
2. Find and select this bookmarklet in your iPhone Bookmark menu.
3. Enter the URL where your custom iPhone icon exists.
4. Click the + icon on your iPhone Safari bottom menu.
5. Select "Add to Home Screen".
6. Preview your custom iphone home screen icon.
7. Click "Add" to put it on your home screen.
Here are some screen shots of my phone:

Once you have created it, if you are comfortable using SSH to get into your phone and play around, you can just put them in directly. You will find that each webclip has its own folder, and they are all stored at /private/var/mobile/Library/WebClips

Inside each webclip's folder you will find an icon.png, so you need to use that name for all your custom icons and just make sure you put them each in the right folder to replace the originals.

Works for me.

That is, assuming your iPhone / iPod is jailbroken. There are many people here who may want to add a custom webclip icon, who don't have a jailbroken device.

Good point. Thanks. There are also many people who are not going to be comfortable playing inside their phone with SSH. Just pointing out the alternative for people for whom it might be relevant.

I used to do that on my old iPhone. Didn't want to jailbreak the 3G.

Your iPhone does not need to be Jailbroken for the above process to work.

Also MacTalk does have a nice icon IMHO (That's why I haven't customized my own yet )

Have a look at the first post. Doesn't require a jailbroken iPhone. And although it's a little fiddly, it works perfectly.

If you go this route for a webclip for the MacTalk forum and want an icon to use...

here..

That would be great with MacTalk written inside the talk bubble.

Opps...apologies.

The first time I added Mactalk it didn't give me a nice icon, I re tried and now it's working.

Isn't their a web address for websites custom icons, the ones that automatically show in the address bar?

Yeah. But I thought chaosboi didn't like the icon. I didn't realise he didn't get any icon.

(Mind you, I kinda like the minimalist approach )

Awesome, thanks. I've been using shitty javascript forwarding pages that add an extra few seconds to loading time to do this.
