I'm trying to upgrade my 2G iPhone from 2.0 to 2.1 now. I'm just wondering if the following method would work.
1) Restore iPhone to factory 2.1 Firmware
2) Use QuickPwn to jailbreak and activate
Since it's been 'pwned' before, it should have remained unlocked?

It should work fine, although I don't think you even have to do the restore to 2.1 first. So long as you have downloaded 2.1 to your computer and select it when prompted, Quickpwn will do the restore when it runs.

Well QuickPwn won't let me choose the device as it says the firmware version is not supported, so it must require 2.1?

I know that this is a terrible question given that this is a Mac forum, but is there a version available for PC? I have a first generation phone, 1.1.4FW and I was hoping to upgrade to 2.1. Thanks heaps

Yeah, it's called WinPwn. Google it.

Quickpwn 2.1 needs Firmware 2.1 in order to work.

WinPwn exists and there is a tutorial for it here at iClarified.
However, I don't think there is yet a version of WinPwn that will get you to 2.1. There is a windows version of QuickPwn that will get you to 2.1 (tutorial in the same place) but if I remember rightly, QuickPwn will only work if your phone has been pwned before, so it depends how you got to 1.1.4. If you got there via one of the other unlock methods, QuickPwn may not work for you. If that is the case, you could use WinPwn to get to 2.0.2, and then QuickPwn to get to 2.1.
Good luck.

My Experiences
I followed this guide to upgrade my first gen phone from 1.1.3 to 2.1. Worked pretty well. Much appreciated.
===
But I might just add my experiences, well problems, when taking my wife's 1.1.3 first gen to 2.1 with pwnage.
Problem: could not get it into DFU mode. Kept getting an error message from iTunes that the iPod (sic) could not be recognised and I should unplug and plug it back in again.
Solved: unplugged all other USB devices from Mac and plugged the iPhone directly into the Mac via USB ... it had previously been plugged in via a USB hub (which had been working fine for charging and syncing). Plugging it in directly seemed to do the trick.
===
Problem: "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1600)" message after selecting the custom firmware.
Tried:
- rebooting computer
- different USB ports
- different cable
So then did a restore using the default iTunes restore (not the custom firmware). THIS DID NOT WORK and I ended up with an iBrick ... every time I connected iTunes it would tell me that the simcard was not supported. And when I took the phone back into DFU mode and tried to restore the custom firmware the restore would fail.
So I think I then had a locked 2.1 iphone. So to unlock I tried:
- new user account
- back to original account
- rebuild of pwnage firmware
- rebuild of pwnage firmware including "enable baseband update" in General and "Update bootloader to 4.6 in Bootneuter setting.
This last step seems to have worked. Syncing content now!
But I'd really like those 5 hours back again!

My problem was that I was getting errors in pwnage and couldn't get passed the "find 3.6 baseband" or whatever it was.
I think what fixed my problem is that I tried a restore of 2.1 firmware in iTunes -- as well, NOT custom firmware.
This too failed, but then for some reason I tried pwnage again, it found everything and it all worked.
I'm not exactly sure what else I did. I had also quit itunes helper, as well as itunes.
I was about to head off to Decryption's for help when it seemed to work.
Only about 3 hours wasted for me...

If your phone has been pwned before, you could try using the QuickPwn tool. It is simpler to use, provides its own step by step guide as you go, and seems to succeed first time more often. Alternatively, just try and try again.

I tried and tried again and managed to get the custom file built but itunes gave me an error trying to restore it. I am trying to update from 2.0 to 2.2. Do I have to upgrade to 2.1 first?
